What are some tips on writing a good compare and contrast paragraph?

When you write a compare and contrast essay, you are going to be talking about how things are alike and how things are different. Here are some good tips to get you started.

  • Start by making a list with two columns: "Similarities" and "Differences." Just write down everything you find out about the two things - don't worry about putting this into any order yet - and make yourself a place to start.
  • Take this list and put the items into any sort of order you want - you can use physical description and go from top to bottom, or you can use time and go from beginning to end, or anything you want to do to make some kind of order out of your list.
  • Now make each similarity and difference into a sentence and start your essay! This will be your list of topic sentences. Remember to start a new paragraph whenever you change the subject. Check your spelling and grammar, too.
  • After each topic sentence, explain how these things are similarities and differences.

Here is a short example of a compare and contrast essay:

WikiAnswers and Video Games: WikiAnswers is a lot like a video game. You can spend hours and hours on this website, having fun, just like you can with a video game. You can learn lots of new thinigs on WikiAnswers, like you can with many video games. WikiAnswers needs your interaction to work, just like a video game does. Also, you need a computer screen to see WikiAnswers, just like you need a computer or television screen to see a video game. WikiAnswers is different from a video game because it is totally up to you what you do on the website and what things you leave here. A video game has a set plot that you have to follow when you play. WikiAnswers lets you ask questions that will be answered by other people, and you can ask anything. A video game might let you ask some questions, but they are usually very limited and have to fit into the game story line. WikiAnswers is also an online website, and most video games are ones that are on your computer or game system, although there are many online video games available. WikiAnswers has supervisors who are online to help you out almost every minute of the day, and video games almost never have anyone on when you play. In conclusion, WikiAnswers is a fun website that can be compared to a video game in many ways.

Here is another example"

Write a three-paragraph persuasive essay in which you make a case for an underlying belief perspective or assumption in Things Fall Apart.?

For perspective, Achebe's Igboland is completely male-dominant: partriarchal. Okonkwo is an excellent and by far the most expressive example. He is respected because he is the opposite of his father: strong where Unoka is weak, fearless where Udoka is terrified, more than willing to do what Udoka would not dream of doing, perhaps BECAUSE Udoka would not dream of doing it. Thus, he is rich and the most respected man in Umuofia.

Because of the dominant 'macho' environment, and because of Okonkwo's zealous, almost radical, effort to establish himself in this light (he refuses to show any expression but anger and kills Ikemefuna, whom he loved dearly) he becomes an 'alpha-male' in Umuofia. He is already rich, already strong, but terrified that he will be seen as weak and poor in any light whatsoever. I think, stong as he is, he is only a little boy who hates his father and the conditions Udoka's laziness has subjected him too, and who is forever trying to break away from the sickly shadow.

The way of life in Umuofia shines on the warrior and the fearless only. The spirits favor the strong. This is what the Igbos believe, and so they revere Okonkwo, the epitome of strong and, secretly, Okonkow revels in their worship, which is why he found it within hmself to kill Ikemefuna. Heconvinced himself it was the act of a strong amn, but he was haunted by the truth: in reaity, it is only the heart of a weak man that shivers when a woman laughs. The women would have laughed had Okonkwo not killed his adopted, and he was not strong enough to live with it. In fact, he was terriffied. Ironically, Okonkwo's most favored child was Ezinwa, Ekwefi's sickly daughter; partly because of Ekwefi herself but also because of Ezinwa's weakness. He was strong in Ezinwa's weakness. And yet, he was disgusted (read 'terrified of') by Nwoye's 'weakness' and his dislike of war stories. Again, this shows the vast difference between male and female counterparts in the old Igbo community. The men were literally forced to be 'manly' or become laughing-stocks. With the appearance of Christianity and the more laid-back attitude of the West (remember that Nwoye joined the Church), Okonkwo and his warriors were left behind. Their way of life was not only challenged but obilerated. The number of human skulls a man owned were suddenly no longer a status symbol. Puzzled, Okonkwo hung himself

How do you write a personal response in anecdote?

An anecdote is a a story about someone... usually interesting, unique, or funny... not boring everyday stuff. So, writing a personal response involving an anecdote would be where you respond to whatever question it is, using a unique story about your life. For instance... when people start talking about embarrassing moments, I remember my high school swimming and diving class. One of my friends in the class worked at Casa Bonita (a famous restaurant in Denver, noted for its indoor cliff divers and children's activities) as a cliff diver. Some of us were scared of going off the high dive, so out teacher thought that having this guy demonstrate his cliff diving skills for the class would be beneficial. We all gathered around the side of the pool to watch him. He climbed up the ladder, and did the most perfect, beautiful dive I have ever seen... he was slim and beautiful, and when he entered the water, there was hardly a splash, he was so smooth. We all stood in awe... especially when we saw his shorts floating on the top of the water. He came up from the bottom of the pool grinning, knowing that his dive had been perfect, and expecting the applause that we usually gave excellent dives. ... We kind of just stared. Then he saw his shorts. He grabbed them, and dived back down to the bottom of the pool to put them on. This time, when he came up, we did applaud... although I don't think he wanted to be the center of attention anymore. ... anyway, that is a story from my life, responding to the idea of embarrassment. Try something similar for whatever you need to respond to... think of something in your life that epitomizes the idea that you are trying to get across, and tell a short story about it.
