How did 'the piano' originate?
Although there were various European steps into eventuating with the piano we have today, the prime origin for the name and invention of the piano was Italy. This also sat comfortably in the music world in that Italian is the prime language used in musical reference. Piano means 'soft' ... the full word for soft being "pianissimo".
When the instrument was first made, it was often referred to as a "piano-forte", as forte means 'loud' in the Italian language; and the piano was a welcome capably loud instrument, as well as soft, due to its huge string size, large soundboard and the force control one is capable of exerting on the instrument.
The piano was invented in 1698, by Italian, Bartolomeo Cristofori (1655-1731) who was employed by Prince Ferdinand de Medici as the Keeper of the Instruments.
Its advantage was that it could (and still can) play both soft and loud as opposed to the harpsichords and organs of the time, which had only one dynamic level. The piano then took over as the main keyboard instrument.

Why are the black keys on a piano grouped in clusters of twos and threes?
There is some debate and uncertainty about that. It was thought that the sequence of tuning had something to do with it, and that might be the case. You tune in intervals of fourths and fifths usually. When you reach a certain point, the note you want to tune is right between two previously tuned notes, and the story is that the smaller keys were put in to make room. If you follow the whole tuning sequence, the clustered black keys will be accounted for. In some early designs, the long keys were black and the smaller in-between keys were white.
Whatever the truth is, we can be grateful that it turned out as it did. Octaves are manageable, and the alternating pattern makes it easier to find the notes you are looking for. Imagine what it would be like if the early keyboard designers tried to do it all with identical keys. I think such keyboards would have died out long ago.

What are weighted keys on a digital piano?
This refers to the attempts, some remarkably successful, to make the keys of a digital piano feel just like the keys on an acoustic piano while playing. With a digital piano, you can have keys that are extremely light, and/or attached to simple springs. The only thing needed to make a sound is for an electrical connection to be made. In an acoustic piano, the key is actually a lever that transfers your energy to what is called the 'action', the mechanical device that propels a felt hammer toward the strings (or wires), causing the sound. The feel of an acoustic piano is distinctive, and a very important part of playing for many who were trained on acoustic pianos. Weighted keys also make it a little easier to go from the digital keyboard environment to playing regular acoustic pianos. Some, including myself, swear by weighted keys on digital pianos, and they are much more satisfying to play.
