What could have happened if all the showers and bathtubs filled up with water for no apparent reason and now the toilets won't flush?

It could be a couple things but it has to do with the sewer main being blocked. The sewer system in your home is constructed to flow by gravity and typically to one main line that leaves the home. Because the system is interconnected and flows by gravity, a sink in your kitchen could function but the water would back up in a bath tub or shower. If you are not familiar with your home's plumbing, contact a "Rotor Rooter" type company to come out and flush / clean the main line out of your home.

Do you need to install a shower pan or liner when installing a tile shower on a concrete floor?

It's still a good idea so that water doesn't seep through and run into the rest of the basement.

AnswerBeing a tile contractor for 18 years I must have heard this question or better yet common misconception about concrete itself. It's important to know that concrete is not waterproof. It cannot stop water from penetrating and migrating along the surface. Yes it is true that most of the water in the stall goes down the drain some of the water is absorbed through the grout joint to the bond coat (thin set mortar) and eventually to the substrate(in this case concrete).A waterproof membrane specific to the tile trade must be used. The installation guidelines are covered by the manufacturer as well as by local building plumbing codes. As a contractor the vast majority or shower stalls I see are improperly constructed and will fail over time. The Tile Council of America publishes "THE HANDBOOK" of ceramic tile installations which will guide you through the written specs of all approved installation methods. AnswerI am planning on building a shower in the next month or two. There is a fairly new method that I am using, called "Kerdi", made by Schulter. This product is put down first, like the rubber or lead methods. I learned ot it through this site: http://www.johnbridge.com

plumbing suppliers sell a vinyl membrane that water does not penetrate and can be used for concrete covering. this membrane is used widely in Florida for those homeowners who wish to have the terrazo stone tile showers. it is a very commonly practiced method in Florida to build shower stalls without showerpans.

When was plumbers putty first made?

1940's by Harry Lichten.

A quick history. During World War II the federal government came to Black Swan and described

a product that was needed. They asked if Black Swan could manufacture this product. Harry Lichten, the owner of Black Swan, responded, "Yes!" Of course, Harry had no idea how he would be able to accomplish this. But, a few months later, the first batch of plumbers putty was made.

Black Swan never knew how this new product was being used. But, for a few years, this new proudct was a very big seller. After the end of the war, the government no longer needed this new proudct. But, Harry Lichten knew he had a great product but he did not know what he could use it for.

After doing extensive research, Harry Lichten realized that the world had no good method for setting a toilet bowl. Plumbers were using linseed oil and powder, mixing them together by hand and then using the end result to make a seal between the toilet bowl and the floor. This was a very sloppy operation and the end result was not very good.

Harry Lichten sold this new putty into the plumbing trade to set toilet bowls and it became an immediate success.

Today plumbers putty has many different uses. It is used wherever a watertight seal needs to be made. This includes setting toilet bowls, fixtures, faucets, stainers, basin cocks and sink frames.

Why would water gurgle and spit out of the bathroom sink and tub drain when you try to flush and plunge the toilet but the toilet will not completely flush even when you plunge it?

Until a professonal replaces or modifies this answer, I'll take a shot at it. From your description of the symptoms, it sounds like you have two problems. The gurgling, spitting "back up" out of the tub and lavatory drains suggest: 1. A significant restriction or near total blockage in the sewer line "downstream" of the toilet and both of those fixtures, and 2. A similar severe restriction or a total blockage in the roof vent system, whose purpose is to prevent pressure built up in the drain system. The few gallons of water involved in the flush take up space [normally only temporarily] in the drain pipe system, and if the venting system is open to the atmosphere, is compensated for by air and sewer gasses being vented to the atmosphere. On the other hand, IF the vent system is blocked, the air pressure buildup in the system causes blow back through the water in the "traps" below the lavatory and tub, which causes the "gurgling and spiting." Hope this helps. j3h.

What situational irony is between the banker and the lawyer THE BET?

I think that the irony is that in the begining, they both thought that money was everything. And ultimately the banker may have won the money but he really lost in life because he was still irrational and young as he was in the beginning, while the lawyer chose to disregard the money because he had gained wisdom, knowledge, and understanding of the world! So the irony is that the banker, who "won" didn't really win at all. He was still trapped in society.

What does it mean when the toilets in a house won't flush properly - the water doesn't go out very quickly and they don't seem to empty correctly?

Here is a guess: The seal between the tank and the toilet is allowing air to seep in, thereby not allowing the momentum of the water in the tank to create the appropriate siphon effect. Change the rubber seal, or realign it.
