Polygamy

There aren't any Mormons who practice polygamy. If a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) is found to be practicing polygamy, they are excommunicated (kicked out).

When the Church made this rule in 1890, many were angered by it and left the Mormon church to start their own groups. Some of the more well known groups are the FLDS (you might know them from the Texas raid in 2008), the Apostolic United Brethren or "Allred Group", the "LeBaron Group", the "Harmston Group" or True Living Church, Centennial Park group, The Davis Cooperative, and others. Each of these groups have their own distinct beliefs, practices, and clergy, but share some similarities with Mormons (such as use of the Book of Mormon).

Occassionally the media uses the term "Fundamentalist Mormons" to describe the polygamist groups. Both the Mormon Church and the Polygamous groups prefer that the media not use this title as it is misleading to the public.

Guru Granth Sahib, Page 26:

"You may enjoy the pleasures of 100's of 1000's of women, and rule the nine continents of the world."

According to Guru Granth Sahib, you can marry 1000's of women, but I don't think the Sikh scholars would agree with their own book.

Polygamy is illegal in the United States. Most states have bigamy laws that can carry felony jail sentences. Where it is a misdemeanor, jail terms are generally no more than a year, but with substantial fines. The maximum sentences are from 5 to 10 years. In some venues, additional criminal charges may be brought, including fraud. Many jurisdictions require proof that the bigamy was intentional, and not caused by an oversight.

Polygamy was legal for the Ancient Egyptians. Although polygamy was legal it was generally only practiced by the wealthy the prospect of paying maintenance to several women must have reduced the practice.

Plural marriage allows for a larger pool of income for families-- three incomes are better than two.

It also allows for a woman to strive for her career, even with a child. Usually the mother takes greater care for the child and will have less options and time for a career; if there are two or more women in the family, the child will still be properly cared for by family while the mother is working. (Like a built-in day care, except without putting the trust into strangers)

Women won't face as much sexual pressure- there is less of an reason for the man to pressure his wife into sex when he can ask a different wife.

Many people have extramarital affairs anyways during monogamous marriages. Having the option of polygamy will make it so the person's other partners will have legal rights to their partner.
