Who helped Butch Defeo murder his family?

Ronald "Butch" DeFeo was a heavy drug user who had financial problems due to his habit. He also had ongoing issues with his parents, especially his father, due to his drug abuse and prior violent behaviors.

There apparently was a great amount of tension and arguments in the DeFeo household; Ronald DeFeo, Sr. was considered to be hot tempered and authoritarian towards his family, Butch DeFeo bearing the brunt of his father's behavior growing up; he then started to act out violently himself. The DeFeos were concerned enough about Butch's increasingly violent and erratic behavior to send him to a therapist, with little result. The DeFeos alternated between arguing with their son and placating him with expensive gifts.

A few weeks before the murders, Butch claimed he was robbed of money that he was supposed to deposit in the bank for his father's car dealership; both the police and DeFeo, Sr. felt that Butch himself had stolen the money and further fights broke out between father and son.

DeFeo, Jr. tried to claim to police it was a mob "hit" on his entire family (even though there is no evidence that his father had any ties to organized crime). The following day, DeFeo confessed to the murders. The most legitimate motive appears to be rage towards his parents over prior issues and an attempt to collect on their life insurance policies. Exactly why DeFeo murdered his siblings is still unclear; possibly to eliminate them as witnesses.

Over the years, DeFeo has given various inconsistent statements regarding the murders.

There is still controversy over whether any accomplices were involved in the killings. At various times in the past, DeFeo has alleged his sister Dawn was the instigator of the killings and that he then murdered her after she killed their siblings. There is controversy over whether Dawn DeFeo had any part in the murders or if she was an innocent victim.

DeFeo has frequently changed his story and his motive over the years (at one point, taking wholesale from the "Amityville Horror" hoax and claiming he was possessed by demons or heard voices who told him to kill his family) that any statements from him must be regarded with great skepticism.

If a person is acquitted for attempted murder and the victim is alive at the time can he be charged a 2nd time for murder in the first if they found evidence and a murder weapon after she died?

The answer is NO. But prosecutors who have later gotten more evidence have been creative in prosecuting the cases again by charging the Defendant with perjury and having the person sentenced to a long prison time because that charge resulted in a death.

How many repeat offenders are in prison?

First of all, recidivism refers to a person's relapse into criminal behavior -- it is defined legally as the rate at which an offender commits other crimes after being released from incarceration. The sex offender recidivism rates are actually lower than for the general criminal population and the percentage depends on who you are asking. There are plenty of donation enriched non-profits that suggest its 50% or more. Many studies [such as those by Hanson and Bussiere (Meta-analysis of studies of sexual recidivism) or Quinsey, Rice, and Harris] have the rate varied at 5%-20% for sexual offenses. Based upon a Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Statistics report, the percentage is more like 5.3%. The state of California has the highest number of registered sex offenders at well over 100,000. The recidivism rates are remarkably low according to the California Department of Justice only 1.9%. The non-profits that list rates of over 50% are bias in that many of them get their funding for being victim rights organizations. The Department of Justice are no friend to crime or registered sex offenders. So their stats can be trusted as closer to fact.

Another View: It is unlikely that this question can ever be answered. Mankind, operating within even very early primitive societies, has always had some type of established social order which operated for the 'common good' of the group. Even back then, although there were no jails as such, forced isolation or being outcast from the group served the same purpose. It was their 'penance' forcommitting transgressions against the group collectively, or individual members of it.

In California, if someone is sentenced to a five-year term and qualifies for an 80% sentence reduction, they would serve approximately four years in custody. You can file for divorce without his approval. The lawyer will serve your spouse with the papers in prison and usually anyone in prison will grant the divorce. If he should refuse the law is basically on your side, but if you have children other provisions may have to be made because he is the father of those children and the courts would have to decide that. There are a combination of things that makes Jews Jewish. One of the most obvious is that they practice Judaism. Just like a Muslim practices Islam and Christians practice Christianity, the Jew practices Judaism.

There is also a Semitic race called Hebrews, whose Jewish descendants are Jews by definition.

So you can be ethnically Jewish and/or you can practice Judaism. Judaism is the oldest continuously practiced religion in the world. It contains many unique practices. Also, many of the laws that are practiced in the Western countries are directly attributable to the Jewish social laws.

Answer 2

A person is a Jew if they have a Jewish mother or have converted, whether or not they are practicing Jews religiously.

Answer 3

Someone who is a Jew is obligated by Jewish Law to keep the Mitzvot (Commandments). This is the meaning of "the chosen nation" - a nation chosen by God to keep his Torah. Though it may have an associated culture and one or more associated languages, the traditional definition of Judaism is the observance of the Torah, which is why dictionaries define Judaism as "the religion of Moses."

Why did Anna Akhmatova's son go to prison?

Anna Akhmatova's son, Lev Gumilev (also transliterated as Gumilyov), was first imprisoned effectively after someone informed on Gumilev for Gumilev's failure to inform on his family members (who were considered dissidents). The second time, Gumilev was arrested and imprisoned, again, based on the testimony of an informer. These were the formal reasons for which Gumilev was imprisoned; however, Gumilev's imprisonment was also a means by which the Soviet state could control his mother's dissidence.

How many years in prison for Aiding and Abetting?

Generally speaking, if a person assists another person or persons in a criminal act, he or she can be charged with aiding and abetting or accessory. Under different state laws, aiding and abetting and accessory vary greatly regarding their definition. Depending on the action of the crime, the participation could elevate to a conspiracy crime.

In criminal law, it is necessary to distinguish between the accessory and the principal. The principal is the person who is responsible for a particular crime. Under most legal jurisdictions, the person or persons charged with aiding and abetting or accessory are not directly involved with the crime that is committed. They are usually not present when the crime occurred. If two or more people are directly responsible, they can be charged as joint principals. The test used in order to distinguish a principal from an accessory is whether the defendant independently contributed to the causing of the crime, rather than merely giving generalized and/or limited help and encouragement.

There are three elements to most aiding and abetting charges against an individual. The first is that another person committed the crime. Second, the individual being charged had knowledge of the crime or the principals' intent. Third, the individual provided some form of assistance to the principal. An accessory in legal terms is typically defined as a person who assists in the commission of a crime committed by another or others. In most cases, a person charged with aiding and abetting or accessory has knowledge of the crime either before or after its occurrence. A person who is aware of a crime before it occurs, and who gives some form of aid to those committing the crime, is known in legal terms as an "accessory before the fact." He or she may assist through advice, actions, or monetary support. A person who is unaware of the crime before it takes place, but who helps in the aftermath of the crime, is referred to as an "accessory after the fact."

To be convicted as an accessory to a crime, the person must possess an awareness of the crime, either before or after its commission. Helping a person after they have committed the crime, without knowledge of the crime having taken place, may be excused in most cases. For example, a person who lets a criminal stay in their home for a period of time after they have committed a crime, but who is not aware of the crime, may not be charged as an accessory.

Punishments for accessories vary in different jurisdictions. Sometimes accessories have had lesser punishments than principals. Other times, accessories are considered to be principals. Common law traditionally considers an accessory just as guilty as the principal in a crime, and therefore subject to the same penalties.

In some situations, a charge of conspiracy can be made even if the primary offense was never committed, so long as the plan has been made, and at least one person acts towards the crime. A conspirator must have been a party to planning the crime, rather than merely becoming aware of the plan to commit it and then helping in some way.

An accomplice is considered completely different from an accessory in legal terms. An accomplice is present when the actual crime occurs, whereas the accessory or abettor can simply provide assistance beforehand or afterwards. The sentences given to accomplices in capital crimes cases have been debated for years. In the 1982 Supreme Court ruling on Enmund v. Florida, it was ruled that an accomplice may not receive the death penalty for a capital crime that was committed by another person.

Regardless of your guilt or innocence, if you have been accused of aiding and abetting, or of being an accessory to, a crime, you should consult with a criminal attorney. You can locate a criminal attorney by visiting the website of the American Bar Association, which provides a free directly of attorneys.
