How do you change Renault traffic steering pump?

I can answer this as i did it yesterday on a 2005 model with ac.

First things first....get new pump or recon one from eBay. Mine was £69! Second is recommended to get new auxiliary belt but that's up to you. Also get 2 litres of power steering fluid. Making a note of the belt route round the pulleys will help too.

Ok, remove the power steering reservoir above the pump. Use a pair of long nose plyers to squeeze the pipe clamps and they then slid off nice and smooth, that gives access to the top of the pump.

By jacking the front right wheel up and removing a couple of plastic barriers you gain access to the pulleys in order to refit belt. You dont need to remove the wheel!

Remove the plastic engine cover on top of the engine to give yourself more room to work...its just 3 small bolts.

Now slid under the van and remove the engine bay undertray. Its about 6 bolts. This gives you access underneath and allows more light in and helps when you drop tools in like i did.

To remove the auxillary drive belt you'll find there's a tensioner keeping it tight. You might want to find a picture of this to make it clearer but by turning the nut by the tensioner you release the belt strain and can slip it off the pulleys. 2 minute job.

There are 3 bolts holding the pump to the engine that can all be got at without stripping the van front off. 2 are by the pulley wheel (Left), top and bottom and one at back of pump (right). You can access left hand bolts by using a socket through the gaps in the pulley wheel itself. The one on the right from above.

Remove the pipes attached to the pump. One is rubber and comes off with long nose plyers on the clamp. The other is metal. Be firm with the metal one its a pig, but don't bend it if you can help it, otherwise not easy to get back on straight. Once all the bolts are out and the pipes are off, simply work the pump free and get it out.

Fitting the new pump is simply reverse of above. You may find it easier to fix the metal pipe to the pump before securing the pump to the engine as it gives a bit more leeway if you bent it slightly getting it out.

The hardest part for me was refitting the belt. Even with the spring tensioner fully pulled up it was double tight getting the original belt back on...the same belt that came off in seconds! I put it down to shrinkage.

Any way, fitting the belt is a case of running the belt round the pulleys in the correct sequence then with a socket, turn the tensioner nut clockwise and slip the final bit of belt onto the pulley. Sounds easy and should be but i struggled.

Once thats all back together, refit all pipes to pump, refit the fluid reservoir, fit the 2 rubber pipes to it and relax.

First thing i did next was turn over the engine a couple of times to make sure belt was happy. Don't touch steering yet.

With the engine now running pour some fluid in the reservoir slowly until it fills up. Keeping the lid off get your mate to work the steering wheel from lock to lock. As he does this , air bubbles should work their way out. If the fluid drops as it fills the system just keep topping up until it stops dropping. Put the lid on once your done.

Give things a wipe down and check for leaks. If it's all good drive round the block. The steering should feel great straightaway.

Once your happy, just fit all the plastic bits back on your van and you're done. Hope that helps!
