What is retinal detachment?

User Avatar

Asked by Getacar

Retinal detachment is when the retina, the part of the back of the eye which contains numerous blood vesses, because detached from the wall of the eyeball. It can be serious and can lead to blindness if left untreated. It is most commonly caused by high blood pressure. The high blood pressure causes pockets to form between the retina and the other lays of tissues in the eye. Over time, the suction between the wall of the eye and retina is gone and the retina slowly detaches from the eye. It is not usually noticed until the retina is actually detaching from the eye. During this time you may see blurriness, floaters or blindness. Fortunatly, the retina can be surgically reattached to the eye and vision can be restored if treated as soon as possible.

What does it mean when you see lights flashing out of the corner of your eyes?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Flashing lights (or fireworks) just outside of your field of vision can be a symptom of a retinal detachment. If the "lightshow" has occurred more than once, it would be wise to make an appointment with your eye doc or primary care doc immediately.

Retinal detachment is repairable if caught early. Making the appointment could save your eyesight!

Why does grey come in corner of your eyes?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Your question is somewhat ambiguous. I don't know for certain if you are seeing grey in the corner of your visual field, or if you have seen in a mirror that there is something grey in the corner of your eyes. In the former case, this might be an early symptom of a serious condition such as retinal detachment or cataracts; if so, you should consult an optometrist and get a medical diagnosis. If you have just seen some gray substance collected in the corner of your eyes, that is probably dried mucus, which is not particularly unusual although if the quantity is abnormally great, it might be the result of an allergy of some kind, probably to pollen.

Why is my left eye larger than my right eye?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

If it is only slightly bigger then I would think your baby is going to be left handed.

The bigger left ear and bigger left eye has really nothing to do with being left or right handed.

Our heart pumps on the left hand side. So the blood comes easier to your left body parts. Usually your left testicle hangs more down because it's slightly bigger and the left breast is usually bigger.

Ask the doctor at the next check up.

What causes bumps in the eye?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It might be pingueculae, a discolored bump on the white of your eye. If that is the case, dryness, sunlight exposure or wind irritation may be the culprits. Artificial tears and sunglasses (to protect your eyes from sun and wind) are recommended. It may also be a good idea to have your eyes checked by an optometrist to rule out any threatening conditions.

What causes your eyes to feel like they have a coating on them and your vision to blur and become hard to focus after a while?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Answer

Is this a common feeling you have or is it seasonal? Some of it could be dry eye related... meaning your eyes arent lubricating properly and the bit that they DO lubricate is thick, and might make you feel like you're having to focus thru a fog or a haze. Usually however, I'd say it's allergies. Depending on where you're located and what types of allergies you have - that may be wreaking havoc on your poor little eyes. There are some really good lubricating drops you can purchase over the counter that may help with that, but it's my hunch that to really FIX the problem, you should probably see your Optometrist or Opthamologist so they can prescribe you a drop that will not only fix whatever irritation you might be having, but stimulate natural tear production too.

Hope that helped! Cindy

Do you cry a lot? If you cry, the salt in the tears may irritate your eyes. I have this problem, and when I cry, it becomes worse. This could also be astygmatism. I do not know how to spell astygmatism, but it can be corrrected with glasses or contacts.
