It could be an even match-up between these two animals. Both hippos and rhinos have thick skin, and a hippo's jaws are powerful enough to cause a bit of damage to a rhino's hide. How strong is a rhino?

Whoever said no, they are wrong. An adult rhino against an adult lion would result in the rhino winning. The Rhino's muscle and weight dominates the likes of a single lion, and a whole pack of lions. No lion pack has ever taken down a Rhino that is not ill, wounded, or old. The lion is only stronger then a baby rhino. Lions need prey that isn't as strong and intimidating as the rhino, that's why their most common meal is gazelle and zebra. Very rare will they eat a Rhino Calf because it's Mother would be so protective, the lions would be risking their lives and allowing a risk of fatal wounds. The Rhino is so dangerous it has no predators, besides humans with their modern technology, if we lived like cavemen still, the adult rhino would not have a single predator. Rhinos have proven themselves to be at the top of being the most defensive animal on land.

Why do Rhinos and Pigs like mud?

Mud helps suffocate parasites and lice and also serves as a natural sun block to keep the hot sun off of the bodies of rhinos and pigs. It is a biothermal response to their lack of ability to dissipate heat; they immerse themselves in the mud if there is not a large round tub of cool water for them to bathe themselves in or if it is too dry for any mud to be found. Pigs do not have any sweat glands; therefore they cannot sweat. Rolling in mud cools them down.

Why are java rhinoceros endangered?

Rhinoceros are endangered for two reasons.

First, and probably most importantly, is that rhinoceroses have been over-hunted for their ivory horns, and they continue to be illegally hunted (poached) for their horns. Some animal species can withstand some hunting, because their populations quickly replenish themselves. However, like many other very large mammals, they reproduce slowly, and thus cannot easily replace their populations.

Second is habitat destruction. They need ample space to find food, and, additionally, human settlements keep breaking up the areas where rhinoceroses live. This makes it harder for mates to find each other, and thus still harder for them to reproduce and replenish their depleted populations.

Three ways you can help rhinoceroses are by:

  • Avoiding wood products that do not have the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) symbol. This symbol means that the wood was harvested sustainably, and thus does not contribute to habitat destruction. This is especially important if the wood product is a tropical wood, because then it is more likely that it came from a rhinoceros habitat.
  • Donating to organizations, such as the World Wildlife Fund, that work to arrest poachers.
  • Last (but CERTAINLY NOT LEAST), be sure to avoid buying palm oil products. This is important because the expansion of palm oil plantations in Southeast Asia is one of the major contributors to the habitat destruction of Asian rhinoceroses.
