Science Experiments

Experiments often conducted by students to test different scientific theories and hypotheses

11,111 Questions

What pieces of information gathered through and experiment called?

Depending on the experiment, scientists collect an array of information. The information, also known as data, can be put into two categories...

Qualitative: descriptions rather than measurements.

Or

Quantitative: recorded measurements.

How do you measure mass using a triple beam balance?

Because it is a weight measuring instrument which is able to measure weights to an accuracy of about 5 to 10 gram. Spring Balances which are commonly for cooking measures, are not very sensitive or accurate. You can only get an accuracy within about 20 grams with spring balances.

How do you write a hypothesis for a science project?

A hypothesis for a science project is any idea that you want to prove or disprove. Some examples are that chicken eggs will not float if they are hard boiled or that hot air does not always rise.

Why is important to know the pH of household chemicals?

I'm not sure about this, but I think if you know the pH value of the soil, then you can plant specific plants and crops and they will not be harmed by the soil. ;)

Other term for hypothesis?

A hypothesis is a statement made for the sake of argument. It becomes a theory when it has been independantly verified. It is not a fact or truth. A theory only has to have one contradictory example to lose its status as a theory.

Why would you do repetition in an experiment?

Religion is important during an experiment because it tells you if the results are consistent. If you didn't repeat portions of the experiment, than you wouldn't be able to gain accurate results.

Which planet is tilted on its side as it orbits the sun?

The planet Uranus is tilted "on its side" about 98 degrees to the orbital plane. But all planets in our solar system have some tilt to the side, including Earth which tiles about 23 degrees. (Mercury's tilt is very small.)

Why is it more comfortable to sit on a bed then on a fence?

Large area means low pressure so it won't hurt when you sit on a comfortable bed...

As a bed has a greater surface area so when we sit in it our entire body's weight gets equally transmitted throughout the bed which means low pressure is acting ... However its totally opposite from sitting on a fence.

Thus it is more comfortable to sit on a bed than on a fence...

Critical thinking why do you think it is wise to limit an experiment to test only one factor at a time?

Because, if he changes several variables at the same time, he will not know which of them caused the result of the experiment to change.

He would have to test again, changing one variable at a time.

What freeze faster sugar water or salt water or water?

sugar is a covalent compound where as salt is an ionic compound,so salt while dissolving in the water splits.

This is mainly dependent of the 'total dissolved partical' concentration (mol/L):

  • Sugar (C6H12O6): 1 mole particles per 180 g (for 1 mole sugar)
  • Salt (NaCl) 2 mole particles per 58.5 g (for 1 mole salt) = 6 mole particles per about 180
  • In water the freezing point will be lowered by 1.86oC per mole particles dissolved:

    So 180 g/L sugar: freeze at -1.86oC

    and 175.5 g/L salt freeze at -(6*1.86) = -11.2oC

or 29.2 g/L salt will freeze at the same as 180 g suger: -1.86oC

Define an irreversible reaction?

An irreversible reaction is one in which the entire amount of a reactant or all of

them are converted into products.

They proceed only in the forward direction and an arrow pointing to the products

is placed between reactants and products in the reaction equation.

A chemical reaction becomes irreversible when one of the products leaves the

homogeneous system where the reaction takes place.

e.g.

suppose A and B are the reactants, and C and D are the products. The

reaction takes place in liquid phase.

If one of the products precipitates (appears as an insoluble solid), or is a liquid

that is not miscible with the reactant liquid phase, or is a gas that comes out of

solution, then we have an irreversible reaction.

Reversible reaction A + B ↔ C + D

Irreversible reaction A + B → C + D↓ (D precipitates out of solution)

A + B → C + D↑ (D bubbles out of solution)

What are the different variables during an experiment?

categorical variables

quantitative variables

ordinal variables

there are more common ones like...

Controlled/constant variable-Variables that do not change at all!

Manipulated/independent variable-Variables that change (intentionally) in order to see their effect on another variable.

Responding/depending variable-Is measured quantitatively or qualitatively and is affected by the independent variables.

Hope this helps.

Where are the chromosomes situatedin a normal cell?

In eukaryotes (animals, plants, fungi, algae) chromosomes are found in the nucleus.

There is also DNA in mitochondria and chloroplasts, which is usually referred to by terms like "mitochondrial DNA" or "the chloroplast genome". The word "chromosome" is not generally used for this DNA.

Prokaryotes (bacteria) have a single chromosome in a region of the cell called the nucleoid. Scientists do not use the term "nucleus" for prokaryotes, as there are no membranes inside the cell, and therefore no nuclear membrane. So, no nucleus!
The nucleus.

What is the data science project?

Data science is a "concept to unify statistics, data analysis and their related methods" in order to "understand and analyze actual phenomena" with data. It employs techniques and theories drawn from many fields within the broad areas of mathematics, statistics, information science, and computer science, in particular from the subdomains of machine learning, classification, cluster analysis, data mining, databases, and visualization.

Why is the molecule SF4 an exception to the octet rule?

The molecule SF4 doesn't have eight electrons like most atoms, it can expand the octet because sulfur has 6 valence electrons and each fluorine only needs one electron to share with sulfur so that leaves to remainder.

What are some kinds of independent variables?

The answer depends on the context. A variable can be independent in some studies but dependent in others. Time can be an independent variable in distance-time or speed-time studies but the time (to failure of a component) is a dependent variable.

Perhaps confusingly, the same two variables can swap places depending upon the context. Suppose I believe that healthier people are taller (their growth is less likely to be stunted by illnesses) then my independent variable is some measure of their health and the dependent variable is their height. If instead, I believe that taller people are healthier (their parents must have had good genes) then the independent variable is height and the dependent is health.

Does water temperature affect how much water will bend a comb?

Yes, warmer water will make the plastic comb more flexible and easier to bend compared to cold water, which will make the comb more rigid and resistant to bending. This is because the heat from the warm water softens the plastic material, allowing it to be reshaped more easily.

Do timber wolves run on their toes?

Wolves actually do run on their toes. This helps them to turn and stop faster as well as run faster, and it allows them to be quieter when sneaking up on prey.
