How fast can hippos swim?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Adult hippos can't swim. This may seem odd since they do spend a lot of time in the water. They hold their breath well and are adapted in many ways for semiaquatic life. But they can't swim. In fact adult hippos can't even float, probably because they're too dense, and although they look fat, their percentage of fat is low.

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Otters live by eating shells that have food or animals in it and they it it in the water by floating with seaweed on there backs. They survive by staying in groups when they jump into the air they look in front of them if you dont know so they see if there's a shark or something that can eat them and they use there good sense of hearing to protect them. It doesn't say anything about the type of environment they live in. Otters also live in freshwater & like fast flowing streams with lots of vegetation: Their diet is mainly small fish & shell fish.

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Otters are about 1-2 feet long but are mostly 1 and a half feet long. And are very, very, very smart. The build there houses out of trees that are around them. The reason why they do this is because they don't want to live in a gushing river they use there dam to block off some water at the end of the river so they have a place to live and grow. they go under water to enter there homes because when the make there dam they also build their house underwater to keep them safe from predator's.

What is an otters home?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Otters will build their homes or Holt, around where there is a good supply of natural food such as fish, crustaceans and amphibians. Large entrance holes are normally found under the roots of old riverbank trees and there is usually plenty of reed and bramble cover around. A lot of holt's are now man made due to habitat loss and are made to encourage otters to a specific areas of conservation. Otters like locations that are not disturbed by human activities such as dog walking. A good indication of whether the holt is active, is a wet mud slide running down in to the water, depending on how high up the bank the holt is situated.
