What does the word 'quilt' mean?

Quilt has two meanings:

# A decorative bed cover or wall hanging made of colored fabric pieces stitched together with a batting center and a cotton or muslin back.

# One step of the process of assembling a quilt that involves stitching the layers together by hand or machine in either straight lines or patterns. This holds the material together so the batting doesn't shift or bunch, and enhances the beauty of the quilt. The exact origin of the quilt is unknown, but they have been made in many different cultures over the centuries. The oldest known remnant dates to c. 960 BCE, in Egypt.

What is an uncut sewing pattern does this mean all the pieces are on a single piece of paper?

Yes, all pattern peices are printed on a single sheet of paper and the user has to cut them apart before pinning to the fabric. Most new patterns are supplied this way (although a nuisance to cut up, it does mean that whenever you buy a pattern you are guaranteed to have all the pieces that you need).

How wind a bobbin on a singer touch sew 600?

Set the stitch width to #3, the stitch length to reverse, and the selection dial to AK (straight stitch). Open bobbin casing door by sliding it toward you. Remove old bobbin if necessary by lifting metal latch and simply pulling bobbin out. Place empty bobbin in bobbin casing (small disc side down) and replace latch. To the left of the bobbin casing is a tiny metal circular button that doesn't actually look like a button, it just looks like it might be part of the machine, push it down. If it is too hard to push then it might need a little bit of oil. Push it until it locks down. Keep the sliding door open. Okay, take a breath. : ) Thread the machine as you would normally would, instead of sliding the tail of thread under the foot, just thread the needle and gently wrap the tail around the knob that is on the left side of the foot just once,(the screw that allows you to change feet), continue holding the thread and now push the pedal at a moderately speed to wind the bobbin. Congrats, you did it!

When you are sewing or stitching why do you need a seam?

The seam is simply the name of the line that is created when two pieces of fabric are joined together. If you are sewing any two pieces together, the place where they are joined is called the seam.

Maybe you are wondering about the seam allowance, which is the amount of fabric alloted to sewing the pieces together. The seam allowance is the distance from the edge you put your line of sewing. In many fabrics that allowance can be very small, but some fabrics require a larger allowance to minimize fraying.

How can you make football helmets out of plastic canvas needlepoint without getting into trouble?

I assume by trouble, you mean with licensing restrictions and rules for specific football teams, perhaps college or NFL teams? I also assume you want to make the helmets and sell them. A way to get around licensing regulations is to make the helmets general and not include the name of the team on the helmet. I do not know if the actual logo would have to be changed a little, too, but I would assume it would have to be. Otherwise, if you wish to make exact replicas of the team logos and names and sell them, you would need to contact the schools or NFL to obtain a license to make them. I got the NFL application once and it was pretty detailed about 10 years ago when I got it, but it is not impossible to meet the requirements. As I remember it, though, it was pretty costly. There also might be a certain number you can make and sell without a license, but I doubt it. I don't think there's a market for premade plastic canvas needlepoint replicas of NFL and/or college football helmets. You could sell them as craft kits, but not premade. How about doing these of the local high school teams? Licensing a high school team's logo wouldn't be expensive--at most a couple dollars payable to the athletic fund per helmet--and I think they'd be popular.

How do you sew up a hole in the middle of the seam of a cotton tshirt without making it look terribly bad?

Flip it inside out and over stitch the hole, flip it back and iron it. If you have a serger or a friend with a serger, using the seamline, start about an inch above the hole and serge down to about an inch below the hole. Try to run the extra threads at both ends back inside the new seam, using a blunt embriodery needle; or tie a knot close to the start/finish of the new seam.

If you have a Singer treadle sewing machine in the cabinet in fair condition model number d927519 or it could be 0 at the end what could it be worth?

Because of the popularity of these machines and the excellent quality, many are still in use today. The value to collectors will depend entirely on how well the machine has been maintained, and what accessories you have. From what I have seen, no one is paying much more than $100 for them, even in the best condition. There is an excellent forum for singer treadle sewing machine owners on about.com where you can find a lot of information about your machine and share ideas with other owners. See the link I have provided.

How do you sew a dress with an even hem?

To hem a dress with the hem the same distance from the floor all around the hem, the person to wear the dress should put it on with the shoes she would most likely wear with the dress. After deciding the hem length, a friend, using a straight ruler or yard stick would then hold the ruler, end on floor, and at what ever height the wearer wants, pin the dress completely around at the desired hem length. The skirt fabric would then be trimmed the same length from the pins to the edge of the fabric, Then general hemming directions would be followed. Only by measuring from the floor UP, can the dress hang the same distance from the floor all around.
