Lord Durham was by sent by Britain to investigate why the Canadians were feeling so rebellious. In his report, he blamed the French-Canadian people and culture. Because of him, Upper Canada and Lower Canada were merged into the the Province of Canada so that the French would be a minority. Furthermore, more English immigration was encouraged to Canada to turn in into an all-Anglo colony (this obviously failed).

The new Province had equal numbers of MPs from Canada West (Ontario) and Canada East (Quebec) and a co-Prime Minister from each. Lord Durham also recommended that the Province of Canada get an elected responsible government, but that was not done until several years later.

The union was not a wholy happy one; the two halves of Canada had frequent political conflicts with each other. In 1867, the union was expanded to include the maritime colonies, becoming the modern Dominion of Canada, so that French-Canada would become one province in a confederation of equals.

The Articles of Confederation required a 100% unanimous vote to make any action. While some people would vote to end the taxes and other problems causing such events as Shays' Rebellion, those who benefited from the taxes wouldn't. The vote wouldn't be unanimous, and no action would be taken.

Shay's Rebellion grew out of the fiscal practices of the state of Massachusetts. Following the war, a former Continental Army soldier, Daniel Shays, led a revolt against what he and other farmers believed was economic tyranny. The post war depression had hit farmers particularly hard, and many lost their farms to debt. The rebellion attempted to over- throw the state government, stopping taxation and foreclosures, but was put down.

A coup usually refers to a successful, bloodless revolt in which a new group, usually some generals seizes power in a country. A coup is a type of revolt.

The government under the Articles of Confederation could not aid Mass. in putting down the "rebellion" as it was to weak to act. Mass. was left to end the event. The rebellion eventually collapsed but the problems continued. Shays and his followers believed they were simply carrying on the sprit of the Revolution. Thomas Jefferson, then minister to France, agreed with them. "A little rebellion now and then is a good thing," he wrote to a friend. "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants." Washington did not agree with Jefferson. He welcomed the failure of Shays's Rebellion and he compared it to his having to use force to prevent a military coup by a group of army officers under his command. Shays and the government of Massachusetts agreed to a meeting in an attempt to end the stalemate. The governor sent the state militia to the armory and Shays's agree to march in with his "troops." The state militia fired and four of Shays's men were killed. The remainder were arrested and tried and several of he rebels were fined and imprisoned, but some received the death penalty. A general amnesty was granted in 1788. Most of the men, by then, had been released or had their death sentences commuted. Two men were hanged on 6 December 1787. Shays was pardoned and he eventually moved to New York where he died in 1825.

The Fredonian Rebellion occured when Edwards had trouble with the land because he couldn't kick the inhabitants that were living there off the land, he then led a small group of 15-30 armed settlers to Nacogdoches and raised a flag bearing the words "Independence, Liberty, and Justice." The Fredonian Rebellion collapsed after one year in 1827.

Shays rebellion happened because enraged farmers were angry about taxes and debts. As a result of no money, their land was taken from them. They revolted against the Supreme Court and captured the building so no citizens would have to pay their dues. They were later all later captured and killed by a local miltia.

The Articles of Confederation only allowed for troops for times of war, not for domestic disturbances. Alexander Hamilton, James Madison and John Jay wrote about the needs of the federal government in the Federal Papers that were published in newspapers of the time.
