Slow Cookers

Slow cookers, also known as Crock-pots, are small or medium electronic cooking appliances used to simmer food at relatively low temperatures over a period of hours. This allows for the unattended cooking of stews, pot roasts, soup and other foods. Slow-cooked food also has certain different flavors compared to convection cooked food.

Crock pots are great! You can add a variety of meat, vegetables and spices, and let it simmer all day long without worrying about it. Yes, olive oil is an excellent choice for chicken. Brush the empty crock pot with olive oil, then rub the chicken inside and out with olive oil. Rub with salt and cracked pepper if desired, and add whole sage and thyme inside the bird and between the skin and the flesh. Place any root vegetable such as onions, potatoes and carrots in the crock pot and set the chicken on top of the vegetables. Add half a cup of broth, white wine or water to the pot. Cook on low for 6 - 8 hours or until done. (you may cook on high for 1 hour, then on low about 5 hours or until done. )

Can you put a frozen roast in the crock pot without thawing first?

Theoretically, yes ... in practibility, no. Baking cooks from the outside towards the inside. The extreme cold in the center of the roast will cause the outer layers to either burn or become so tough that one might need a chainsaw to cut slices. The center will remain raw, given the standard cooking time.
