Should tobacco companies be responsible for their customers actions?

They do not have any responsibility for their customer because the customers made the decision to smoke. So since they want the tobacco they can take everything that comes with it. People hear about tobacco uses and how they affect your body but apparently they don't listen so they can not hold any tobacco company responsible for deaths or and diseases that come with smoking.

I agree with the above whole heartedly. They are selling a legal product, and the buyer should be accepting all the liabilities associated with that product, or not buy the product in the first place. An analogy to this scenario ... I buy a lawnmower from Frimfratz Company, and it accidentally cuts off my big toe ... so Frimfratz Company is then responsible for everyone that loses their big toe? Hardly.

What affect does smoking have on how long you live?

Smoking can take years off your life in two ways.

  • By promoting diseases such as emphysema and cancer of the lungs or throat. These either spread to other areas or prevent the proper functioning of the lungs and airways. Such diseases can be fatal in a short period of time.
  • The same action that causes emphysema also prevents the lungs from obtaining enough oxygen. Tar and other contaminants are dissolved in the fluids of the lungs to create a sticky black film. This can block air flow and also cause irritation and swelling. The collection of fluid can lead to pneumonia, and the blockage of alveoli causes hyperventilation. Both of these conditions cause deterioration of general bodily health.

Fortunately, the destruction of lung functions is slowed by the body's own repair system. It can take many years before the chronic effects become apparent, but by that time significant irreversible damage may have been done. Stopping smoking will reverse many of the lesser symptoms and restore healthy lung conditions.

Can you still get cancer from only occasionally using chewing tobacco?

Statistically, the longer you use any form of tobacco product, the more likely you are to develop the cancers most common for that kind of product. That does not mean that occasional use is safe. For one thing, some people are more prone to developing cancers than others. There is much we do not know. If you are not yet addicted to nicotine, we would suggest not becoming so.

What percentage of adult deaths is attributed in part to smoking?

It is not possible to say how many smokers died specifically of smoking. Smoking is directly related to a number of fatal conditions, but it is difficult to point to any given one and say it was caused by smoking, with the exception of some degenerative lung diseases.

It is possible, however, to study large populations and compare the longevity and causes of death of smokers and non-smokers within the population. The following figures came from a study of more than 15,000 doctors in the United Kingdom, which followed them from 1951 to 2001, a period of 50 years.

The excess mortality associated with smoking chiefly involved vascular, neoplastic [tumors, both cancerous and benign], and respiratory diseases that can be caused by smoking.

Men born in 1900-1930 who smoked only cigarettes and continued smoking died on average about 10 years younger than lifelong non-smokers.

Cessation at age 60, 50, 40, or 30 years gained, respectively, about 3, 6, 9, or 10 years of life expectancy.

The excess mortality associated with cigarette smoking was less for men born in the 19th century and was greatest for men born in the 1920s.

The cigarette smoker versus non-smoker probabilities of dying in middle age (35-69) were 42% versus 24% (a twofold death rate ratio) for those born in 1900-1909, but were 43% versus 15% (a threefold death rate ratio) for those born in the 1920s.

At older ages, the cigarette smoker versus non-smoker probabilities of surviving from age 70 to 90 were 10% versus 12% at the death rates of the 1950s (that is, among men born around the 1870s) but were 7% versus 33% (again a threefold death rate ratio) at the death rates of the 1990s (that is, among men born around the 1910s).

British Medical Journal 2004;328:1519 (26 June), doi:10.1136/bmj.38142.554479.AE (published 22 June 2004)

These figures speak for themselves.

What is chewing tobacco like is it gross?

Tobacco is a versatile drug; it can be smoked, chewed, or snorted in the form of snuff. The gross thing about chewing tobacco (not counting the addictive and carcinogenic properties) is that you chew it and then spit it out, you don't swallow it. It is somewhat disgusting to see someone spit out a wad of brown gunk. In places where this happens a lot, people have (or used to have) a special container for people to spit into, called a spittoon.

What is the drug classification of nicotine?

Tobacco itself is not a drug. Tobacco contains nicotine, which naturally occurs in the leaves of the tobacco plant, which is a potent central nervous system stimulant. Nicotine is responsible for the addictive properties of smoking and tobacco products.

The pharmaceutical industry is currently researching the use of nicotine-based drugs to treat a range of conditions, ranging from obesity, dementia type disorders and psychotic disorders, and also for general pain relief.

As for nicotine being responsible for the addictive properties of smoking, the long term success rate of NRT (as low as 1.6%, as admitted by the pharmaceutical companies themselves) would strongly suggest otherwise.

Are brass tobacco pipes safe?

No tobacco pipe is safe. Tobacco smoke contains poisons. Brass heats up and causes the tobacco to burn much hotter. We do not have information on what that does to the chemicals, but we suspect it is not a good thing.

If you must smoke, we would suggest sticking with more conventional materials.

It would depend on how long you had quit. If you had only recently quit, smoking would probably start your habit all over again.
