This depends on the situation. If you are out of a service area, sometimes you can text a message and still get it sent. If you are shut off due to an unpaid bill, you will not be able to send text messages.

Some cell phone carriers save your conversation logs, and there could be a program specifically for your phone to see these specific messages. It's easiest with an iPhone because all your texts are saved as an encrypted file deep down in a hidden folder.

Well, there is no such thing as "free" SMS - this is commercial service provided by network operators and you always pay for it one way or another - just sometimes not with money.. By sending "free" SMS you provide the website with confirmed cell phone number of your friends or family - which is very valuable information for marketing etc. Commercial sites usually have some privacy statement that at least promises your data will not be disclosed - but you will not find it on "free" websites. So in the end it is your choice of how to pay. Bottom line - before sending "free" message to someone think if the person you send message to will be happy to receive a bunch of spam messages from unknown advertisers..

I personally use TimeClickr for international messaging - they have good coverage, no contracts or plans, and they turned out to be the cheapest for the countries I was searching. They give few free trial credits so you can check if it works for you before paying anything. They also recently added the option to rent personal SMS-enabled phone number in some countries (US included) - so your friends can now respond to your messages locally - no need in international plans anymore. Pretty cool..

Sadly, it is possible to hack texts. There are applications for smart phones now that allow a person to text at a certain time of the day to a specific number. It is all set up before and the application automatically sends it later.
