Just this week, I watched a 5 foot snake work his way into my garage/basement even when the doors were down...talk about terrified! I ended up calling the local police, and two wonderful and brave policemen here in Hamilton Co. Tennessee removed, and then killed the snake after seeing his pointed head, a sign of poisonous. They bagged the dead snake and took it to the rangers station where they identified it as a copperhead. HELLO!! I am a single woman with a deathly fear of snakes...poisonous or not!!! To even think of having a snake IN MY HOUSE was more than I could bear. The policemen were wonderful.... and let me tell you what they told me. First, use mothballs in the garage or basement, as snakes cannot stand the strong odor.( I immediately went to Wal Mart that night abd bought 4 boxes of them and shook them out around the edges of my doors in the garage and all around the edges of my entire basement.) The next thing to do is to apply a wide line of lime around the edges of your yard, especially near the woods where the snakes are most likely to enter your yard. Apparantly, the lime burns their skin when they crawl over it, so it causes them to go in the other direction. I hope this helps you. I had looked at the label on that "Snake A-Way" product at Lowes, but it states that it does not deter cottonmouths, rattlesnakes or copperheads. Good luck! Lydia in Chattanooga
What is the more poisonous -- land or sea snake?
This is not an easy answer. Snakes fall under two headings: land snakes & sea snakes. Comparing toxicity, sea snake venom exceeds that of land snakes, for sea snakes must hunt cold-blooded prey (the successful rendering of which requires poison of a higher toxic level than that required for warmblooded prey). Additionally, sea snakes hunt in a dilute medium. Insufficient data exists on the intra-genus toxicity of discrete sea snakes. Generally, snakes employ two types of venoms: Neurotoxins (acting on nerves) and Haematotoxins (acting on blood).
Among the neurotoxic land snakes, the Asian Krait is the most poisonous snake of the world, surpassing even the King and Speckled cobras. Cobras cause greater death among people, however, due probably to their greater size and, thus, their higher volume of venom delivery. Among the haematotoxic land snakes, the vipers & pit vipers take the prize for the "most poisonous." A small dose of viper/pit viper venom can produce typical haematotoxic symptoms. A larger dose can kill instantly by stopping the heart. The Gaboon viper combines both neurotoxic and haematotoxic elements in its venom, making it particularly lethal.
All told, however, we might justifiably say that the seasnakes are the most poisonous snakes in the world.
-- Yes, I agree, for the reason that sea snakes hunt in water and need fast-reacting venom, so their prey won't get away.
the fierce or inland taipan of Australia one bite from this snake yields 110mg enough to kill 100 people or 250000 mice 750 times more venomous than a cobra
How does the snake retina differ from that of other vertebrates?
Snakes eyes differ from eyes of mammals or other vertebrates. Other vertebrates are able to focus a sharp image on he retina of their eyes, by using a special muscle to change the shape of the lens. In many snakes though these muscles are absent, therefore a snake cannot focus on a stationary object. They are however very sensitive to movement. Some snakes have excellent eye sight but they are very uncommon.
What special care does a snake need?

[1] They're fast growing, during the first 3-4 yrs. In fact, they never stop growing. But once they reach an average of 5' their growth slows down to the point that it's not obvious. So typically they may start out in a 10 gal aquarium. But eventually they'll need a 20 gal aquarium. And if they're going to be bred, then they'd most likely prefer a 30 gal aquarium. But their babies and their mates should have their own aquaria. For corn snakes don't like to share space, even with other corn snakes no matter if they be family. [2] They're picky about an environmental air temperature rangin from 70-75 degrees F at one end of the aquarium to 80-85 degrees F at the other. The safest options for reaching that temperature are by heating bulbs, or undertank heating pads. Out in nature, they may be seen sunning on different ground surfaces. In the aquarium, heated rocks tend to burn them. [3] They're picky about being handled. They may choose to throw up if they decide they're being picked up and touched other than for their aquarium to be cleaned, or their bottom covering to be changed. [4] They're picky about being on display. So the aquarium should have a place they can fit into, and be totally out of view. And they'll need that hiding place if they're bred, for laying eggs. They tend to lay 12-24 eggs, within a month of mating. And those eggs tend to hatch in about 10 wks. [5] They're picky about their drink and food. They want their water clean, and regularly changed. And they like their food, once a week and the same size around as they are. They don't need to eat living things. They can be counted on to squeeze and swallow already dead critters. [6] They're picky about what covers the bottom of an aquarium. Covering such as cedar shavings or corn cob bedding can cause breathing problems, and dehydration and blockage, respectively. So they prefer butcher paper, paper towels, or reptile bark. [7] They know how to climb, and squeeze through tight spaces. And, in nature, they've been known to chase prey up and down trees, and in and out of what looks like too small holes. So their aquarium should have well-fitting and tightly-sealed tops. [8] In nature, they may live 10-15 years. They may add another 8-13 yrs in captivity. [8] By their coloring, they're mistaken for copperheads. [9] By their defensive/offensive behavior, they're mistaken for rattlesnakes .

What distinguishes a legless amphibian from a worm or snake?
Legless amphibians, like caecilians, have skull and bone structures unique to amphibians, as well as specialized sensory structures. They also typically have internal fertilization and give birth to live young, unlike many worms. Snakes, on the other hand, are reptiles and have scales, a different jaw structure, and specialized organs like venom glands or heat-sensing pits.
Why do Indians carry snakes in baskets?
The asker is probably refering to Snake Charmers, who carry snakes in wicker baskets. This is to prevent it from escaping as well as allowing it to breathe freely. Snake Charmers are mostly from the backward class of NAGAS. They are experienced in catching poisonouos snakes and also treat snake bites effectively. After catching the snake they tactfuly remove the gland containing the venom. Snakes are always frighening reptiles and people are afraid of them. The Indian Government is now trying to entice Snake Charmers to cultivate snakes to extract venom instead of as a way of earning money by entertaining people with thrir snakes. A drop of snake venom is worth more than its weight in Gold. Snake venom is used for producing anti snake venom.
but they do eat other venomous snakes. The Coral King Snake resembles a Coral Snake, but the stripe pattern is different. Remember: Red touch Yellow, Kill a Fellow; Red touch Black, Good for Jack. You can safely keep a King Snake as a pet. ___________ I would like to add that the red and yellow red and black saying isn't true anywhere but in the United States. It is absolutely true that King snakes of North America are not poisonous, but what you called a Coral King Snake is more properly named a Banded King Snake. It is certainly one of the most beautiful and colorful snakes in the worlkd, and when I was a child, we kept both the Speckled King Snake and the Banded King Snake and placed them in our barn as a control for rats, as well as poisonous snakes. Rattlesnakes were a real problem where I was raised in North Mississippi, and King Snakes were great predators of other snakes, including smaller King Snakes. I have witnessed them swallowing rattlesnakes several times, although I never got to see the initial strike and killing of the rattlesnake. Whenever I was playing in the woods, fields or along the river which ran alongthe back side of our property, and saw a King Snake, I would catch it and place it inside my T-shirt and take it home to release in the barn. I got many a whipping from my Mother for bringing them in the house to play with them. They are very mild mannered and not at all prone to bite, at least the ones I caught were. Way Cool Snakes
