It doesn't matter on your own land or someone else's land with permission. But on trails you have to be 12 to ride alone, but you can't cross roads. When you turn 14 you can cross roads by yourself.

you probably need a new reverse gear. Take off the chaincase cover and inspect your gears for wear. You should be able to tell if they are worn, even w/o alot of mechanical knowledge. Hopefully it's just an adjustment needed. If you need the gear(s), I can probably help you out 315-964-2577

From what I have read in the shop manuals for the 1979 and 1980 Exciters, there was a change between those 2 years where the CDI was not interchangeable due to the timing. So, I'm not sure how well it would run if you used one from a 1978 Exciter in a 1981 Exciter, or if you would eventually burn down the motor. However, if you have installed one, and it is working, then that's great.

To set the clutch on a Polaris snowmobile make sure you have cleaned the entire clutch assembly and adjust all the bolts to the proper setting. With both of those things done make sure you have properly lubed and set the belt to the right tension.

On most sleds there are two to four bolts through the rear of the tunnel. Remove the nuts, lift the seat to clear studs, pull backward to release front retainer. Now unplug any electrical wiring ( tail light ). Seat should be free now.

(Accompanied means being on the same snowmobile as the operator.) *Ages 12 thru 15--Operation only if hold a valid snowmobile safety certificate, or accompanied by and adult, or accompanied by a person over 14 years of age,having a valid snowmobile safety certificate. *Ages 16 and over--May operate alone without a certificate.
