How do you remove the chain case from a 1988 Polaris Snowmobile?
If I remember correctly, the exhaust had to come off first. Then remove the bolts on the cover (probably 3/8 or 7/16 head). Since you haven't mentioned if it has reverse gear, I'll assume it doesn't. Inside you'll find a chain/gear set and a tensioner. Back off the tensioner bolt, then remove the bolt holding the lower gear and the nut or bolt on the smaller upper gear. The chain/gears should now come off as a unit. With those off you should be able to remove the large bolts holding the chaincase housing and slide the whole thing off both shafts.
It's a good idea to take pictures of the steps during disassembly, to have a reference for when you put it all back together. If the sled has reverse, the steps are basically the same with the exception of a linkage, an ilder gear and a spring-loaded second gear on the driveshaft to remove. This is where the pictures come in real handy.

check your battery if the battery is not working properly then the engine will send the power from the alternator straight to the headlights and other electronics one way to test this is if your lights dim when you are in idle and get bright when you are reving BTW i would recomend carrying a flashling in case of this happenig in the middle of a forest lol. if not the battery check the headlight wires and the bulb used
