Why were North Carolina and South Carolina founded?
Eight English Noblemen were assigned rights to the Province of Carolina. These eight Lords Proprietor set about colonizing Carolina and designing laws. The settlers did not like the laws so the Lords made simpler laws.
One of the laws the people liked stated that every one was free to worship God in the way he thought right. This brought people of all religions to the Province of Carolina.
Cultivation of rice became profitable in the southern part of Carolina and African slaves became the major population. The northern part of Carolina was settled by former indentured servants who established small tobacco farms.
Due to dissent over how the province was to be governed, differing geographies, and contrasting courses of the inhabitants, the Province of Carolina was split into two provinces in 1712, the Province of North Carolina and the Province of South Carolina. By 1729, descendants of 7 of the 8 Lords Proprietor sold their shares back to the crown and the two provinces became English Crown Colonies.
By the time of the American Revolution, South Carolina was one of the richest colonies. South Carolina became the eighth state to enter the union when it ratified the United States Constitution on May 23, 1788.
North Carolina was the 12th state to enter the union when it ratified the United States Constitution on November 21, 1789.

There are a number of islands off the coast of South Carolina. While several islands are largely residential, including Sullivan's Island, Pawley's Island, Edisto Island, and Seabrook Island, many are popular vacation destinations. Kiawah Island and Hilton Head Island are two such popular spots for travelers.
Visitors to the islands off of South Carolina enjoy the beaches, on which the sand is quite firm - allowing for easy biking, jogging, and walking. Families with young children also like these beaches for the firm sand and the minimal surf, particularly on Kiawah Island where the beach is one of the few on the East Coast that runs east to west.
Most of these islands have a lush maritime forest and abundant wildlife, including alligators, egrets, bobcats, and much more. Dolphins are also easy to spot frolicking in local waters.
Popular activities for visitors to these islands include biking, beaching, swimming, kayaking, and exploring nature.

How did South Carolina get its shape?
Charles II of England, as a reward for helping him gain the throne, gave the land today known as the Carolinas two 8 nobles who in 1663 became the lord proprietors of the area. In 1729 South and North Carolina were formed from the original land. In 1670 a few colonists and planters started a town called Charleston (named after the king). The economy was initially based on trading furs, and growing crops for the West Indies. It soon became a royal colony and by the middle of the 18th century it was filled with plantations and it resembled the culture and economy of the West Indies.
Why did South Carolina believe that it was legal for it to secede?
The state of South Carolina based their legal right to secession on the premise that individual states had created the US Constitution, and agreed to form the United States. There was no language in the ratified document that made it "irrevocable."
However, other legal analysis suggested that since the original 13 states had all agreed to be bound by the Constitution, and all 20 later states had been admitted to the Union with some suggestion of permanence, releasing one or more states would have to be approved by all current states, possibly requiring a Constitutional amendment.
