This is a version of the Model 1903 produced from 1918 to around 1921. It was designed to accept the a .30 caliber conversion unit called the Pederson Device, which consisted of a replacement bolt and a large capacity box magazine. The slot milled into the left side of the receiver is the ejection port utilized by the Pederson conversion. The Device was ill-fated and was scrapped by the government in 1931. Most of the Springfield Mark 1's were updated in the early years of WW2, 1941-43, for use in the training of new recruits. The Pederson Device is now nearly impossible to find, however, it is rarely encountered in the $30,000 range. Ammunition for the device is rare and often unsafe to fire. The 1903 Mark 1 rifles are also uncommon with only about 102,000 manufactured. Guns with original parts are more valueable than the WW2 rearsenaled examples. Several of these guns were imported by Century Arms, and these are identifiable by a stamp usually located near the front sight on the barrel. Depending on condition and configuration the value could be anywhere in the $600 to $2200 range. Import marked models deduct about 5%.

They are infact an entirely croatian product, ther original name was and still are HS2000 (hrvatski samokres 2000/ croatian pistol year 2000) and they are commercialized in USA only with name XD following a 15 year export agreement with Springfield armory.

First, MAKE SURE THE GUN IS UNLOADED!

Pull the slide to the rear, and lock it.

Remove the magazine.

Take the spring pressure off the recoil spring, by carefully turning the catch to release the recoil spring cap.

Unlock slide, and slide it so that it's over the dismount cutout.

Push slide lock out with fingers, and take slide off rails.

Barrel will fall out of slide.

Reverse to re-assemble.

No. I have one of these rifles and have been trying to track down some info on them, to no avail.have spoken to both springfield and savage and neither had info on this gun.Have you tried Numrich gun parts corp?They may be found on the web.I would also look at gunbroker.com.Look under gun parts,and look at E-bay they can still list and sell gun parts depending upon your needs.

For a straight answer I would say 109 years old as of 2008 the 1899 I know was used around the time of the Mexican American war buy some of the us army calvary (sp) and then was traded out for the new Springfield 1903 which was heavly used buy sniper in WWII and is still in use today by some snipers for combat use.
