Submarines

Submarines are naval craft that can operate for an extended period of time underwater. They are used primarily as warships, as well as for business, scientific and other purposes. Submarines are different from submersibles, which only have limited underwater capability.

Why might a submarine be crushed if it sinks too low in the ocean?

Submarine hulls are subject to sea pressure, and that pressure increases the deeper the submarine goes. There are design limits to the amount of pressure that a hull can take, and if that pressure is exceeded by diving too deep, the hull will fail and will be crushed.

Are women allowed to serve on navy submarines?

As of earlier this year (2012) the U.S. Navy qualified its first female submariner, with several more in the pipeline.

However, for now (and likely the foreseeable future), female crew are limited to officers only, since they're afforded their own staterooms and the privacy concerns are reduced considerably.

Why do submarine not sink?

As with all boats, a submarine does not weigh as much as the amount of water it displaces. To go under the water's surface, it pumps water into special tanks (ballast tanks), and to rise up again those pumps force the water out of the ballast tanks and back into the sea.

Ans 2 - Submarines can go deep and rise again by using water ballast and air pressure, as planned by the captain. -Unfortunately, when things go wrong, submarines DO sink.

Why do submarines have two periscopes?

There are generally 2 periscopes, the Primary and the Attack scopes.

The Primary periscope is normally used during normal periscope depth observations of the ocean surface (to verify known Sonar contacts and to search for any not picked up by Sonar) and the sky (aerial targets). In addition to optics, it also contains electronic sensors that receive a multitude of signals, including intelligence and navigation.

The Attack scope is a much smaller profile scope, and as such is much harder to detect during submerged periscope depth approaches or observations. It is only used for final surface target range calculation, or in those instances where extreme stealth is required during periscope operations. It also server as the backup scope (everything on a submarine has at least 1 backup system) should the primary become unavailable. Due to its size, it normally doesn't carry the sensory features of the Primary.

How role did submarines play in World War 1?

In World War I, the Germans used submarines mainly to create a Submarine Blockade on Britain in an attempt to starve Britain out of the war. This blockade is similar to the Naval Blockade Britain used on Germany, but was not as effective, and Germany stopped halfway through the war. However, towards the end of the war when Germany was losing, they restarted the 'unrestricted submarine blockade', which accidentally sunk an American passenger ship. This angered America, leading to America's participation in the war, and the ultimate defeat of Germany.

What is Hell and high water submarine name?

The submarine referenced is the USS Bowfin (SS-287) but stock footage and sets were used in the film. The Navy did not allow filming onboard submarines until the end of the Cold War, and even then it's strictly regulated for security reasons. Even submarine crewmembers require permission from the CO to have a camera aboard ship.

Can woman go in submarines?

Women have been riding submarines for many decades; however, until the current U.S. Administration changed policy, women have not been allowed to serve aboard submarines for a variety of reasons, but in general since it's hazardous duty and has safety hazards that affect women more than men.

While "social experiments" and the desire to serve aboard a submarine are great goals, in practice it's easy to want something when you don't know the risks involved, and the risks aren't publicly known since minimum clearance for anything regarding a modern submarine is Secret/NOFORN. Few submariners (myself included) ever get away from submarine duty without some health problem, be it lung related, mental, or cancer. The British Royal Navy's policy against women serving aboard submarines is specific, stating the radiation danger to a woman's fetus as the primary factor. Of course that's BS (radiation levels on board modern boats are less than you get from the sun) but the dangers to the female reproductive system from other chemical agents and radiation sources other than the reactor are very real. Of course that's not in the recruiting brochure when you're asked to volunteer.

It remains to be seen if the policy shift will actually take effect - unlike the changes with gays and women aboard combat ships, flying combat missions, etc., submarine duty is strictly a volunteer force, and the Navy could wind up with a mass exodus of qualified sailors from the submarine force if they push the issue. Navy life in a submarine isn't like a regular ship, and the mental stresses are hard enough without any other distractions.

One of the biggest opponents of women serving aboard boats is the wives of current submariners. Divorce rates for the submarine force typically run around 70%, given the long absences without any communication (unlike surface ships), and above average port destinations. The thought of any woman in such close quarters does not sit will with most wives.

In the past, women who ride submarines temporarily are usually assigned quarters in the XO or CO's stateroom, which has its own head facility. The biggest problem is the complete lack of privacy, even in officer and senior enllsted areas.

As of May 2011, Submarine Base Groton has received its first female candidates for submarine duty. However, they are female officers, and will be assigned to SSBN's and SSGN's due to the minimal impact on crew co-habitation.
