Is brain cyst surgery dangerous?

Every surgery carries risk with it. Surgery on the head would be even riskier. However, if surgery is indicated, it's probably a better option than not having it. Be sure to get a second opinion before any major medical procedure. Doctors aren't gods; they're just guys doing work. The above is true and especially the brain, but leave the worrying up to the surgeon because that's what he/she is being paid for and a good prayer or two never hurt. Usually brain surgery is quite successful.

Can Laser surgery can permanently improve a persons vision?

LASIK is a surgical procedure where the front of the eye is permanently reshaped to focus light properly on the retinal photo-receptors in the back of the eye. It sends sharply focused light to the nerve layer. This information must then be carried by electrical signals to the brain for processing and ultimately vision. If there are problems behind the cornea anywhere in the visual system, then LASIK will not restore vision. For instance in the case of a clouded lens within the eye, or a damaged retina in the back of the eye, the signal will be blocked and no useful vision will result.

LASIK replaces the vision from a misshaped eye, but cannot regain vision if contact lenses or glasses will not regain the vision. Some people have very bad vision without their glasses or contacts, and in these cases LASIK can regain the vision that they once had at an early age. This is different from the case described above.

When does the pain stop after my knee replacement?

It can take a while to heal, which is different for everyone. However, doing the recommended exercises during the healing process will definitely help end the pain and help you regain the use of your knee over that time. Make sure you don't overdo other activities.

If the level of pain changes, check in with your doctor.

Where does kaiser do lap band surgery?

Yes. Kaiser SoCal does Bariatric Surgery in 2 of their SoCal locations and 1 bariatric clinic.

The program is called OPTIONS and you have to meet certain criteria and be referred by your doctor. If your BMI is over 40, you automatically quality.

I just went to the orientation class which discusses the 3 different options one has. They go over the different surgeries which include lap band (they don't recommend), Roux-en Y and Sleeve Gastrectomy. You have to take their 12 week course for 2 hours once a week, have a series a blood work performed at week 3 and 10, psychiatric evaluation and they recommend you take a nutrition class. Once you get to the end of your classes you will sit down with the surgeon to decide which of the 3 procedures is best suited for you. You will ultimately make that decision.

Once you finish the class it's a matter of weeks before your surgery is performed.

I found out that it was fairly easy to get my doctor to refer me since my BMI is over 40. So far it has been great and very easy with Kaiser.

How do you know if you break your arm?

if the frigin bone is sticking out!!! duh i mean come on and if it hurts like hell.

-- Added

That is correct the bone will be pushing the skin, however it may not actually breach the skin.

Furthermore, if you think your arm is broken and the bone is intact it may be 'fractured' and it will hurt, not nearly as bad as a broken arm and generally will swell while you sleep and when you wake it will be the most painful. So check out hairline fractures.

--Added

I broke my arm last year and there was NO swelling at all! The doctors were not sure until it was x-rayed. I broke it in 2 places and bent the bone. Bending the bone hurts as well. The bone is not always pushing the skin though, my friend went 2 days before her mum realised she had broken her arm in 4 places and had to have 2 operations!

--Added

Let's face it, if it was really broken it would be too painful to use your computer, and you'd already have gone to the emergency room by now! Do you fall into the "I have very minor swelling, no visible injury, but using my arm is too painful camp?" Make sure you take a pain killer like Allieve and put ice on the arm until you can drag yourself away from the TV to see your doctor. After all, seeing who got voted off American Idol is much, much, much more important then waiting in an emergency room all night just to be told to take two Asprin and call the doctor in the morning. But, jokes aside, if you're in doubt, you should consult with a real doctor.

Who was the first person to perform plastic surgery on a patient?

  • The father of modern plastic surgery is generally considered to have been Sir Harold Gillies. A New Zealand otolaryngologist working in London, he developed many of the techniques of modern facial surgery in caring for soldiers suffering from disfiguring facial injuries during the First World War.
  • Plastic surgery is a medical specialty concerned with the "correction" or restoration of form and function. Though cosmetic or aesthetic surgery is the best-known kind of plastic surgery, most plastic surgery is not cosmetic; plastic surgery includes many types of reconstructive surgery, hand surgery, microsurgery, and the treatment of burns.
  • Treatments for the plastic repair of a broken nose are first mentioned in the Edwin Smith Papyrus, a transcription of an Ancient Egyptian medical text, the oldest known surgical treatise, dated to the Old Kingdom from 3000 to 2500 BC. Reconstructive surgery techniques were being carried out in India by 800 BC. Sushruta was a physician that made important contributions to the field of plastic and cataract surgery in 6th century BC. The medical works of both Sushruta and Charak originally in Sanskrit were translated into the Arabic language during the Abbasid Caliphate in 750 AD. The Arabic translations made their way into Europe via intermediaries. In Italy the Branca family of Sicily and Gaspare Tagliacozzi (Bologna) became familiar with the techniques of Sushruta.
  • Joseph Constantine Carpue spent 20 years in India studying local plastic surgery methods. Carpue was able to perform the first major surgery in the Western world by 1815. Instruments described in the Sushruta Samhita were further modified in the Western world.

How does drinking alcohol effect open heart surgery recovery?

"Alcohol thins the blood, slows healing, and increases bruising. You should stop drinking at least 1 week before surgery, and abstain for 1 week after or longer if you are taking narcotic pain medications. http://www.beautysurg.com/learn/general_healing3.html " However, if the surgery is minor, you are a healthy individual and are not taking pain killers or antibiotics, one or two drinks a day is unlikely to have any significant impact on healing time. Are the benifits of bariatric surgery worth the risks involved?

While bariatic surgery has its positive aspects, there are also risks to consider. It is up to you to weigh the risks and rewards, personally. What is the difference between cosmetic surgery and reconstructive surgery?

Plastic surgery is a medical specialty concerned with the correction or restoration of form and function. While famous for aesthetic surgery, plastic surgery also includes a variety of fields such as craniofacial surgery, hand surgery, burn surgery, microsurgery, and reconstructive surgery. Cosmetic Surgerydefined as a subspecialty of surgery that uniquely restricts itself to the enhancement of appearance through surgical and medical techniques. It is specifically concerned with maintaining normal appearance, restoring it, or enhancing it beyond the average level toward some aesthetic ideal.
Plastic Surgery in the true sense of the word is that surgery performed by plastic surgeons. Plastic surgery can further be divided into cosmetic surgery and reconstructive surgery. The difficulty in the question is that alot of non-plastic surgeons advertise that they are "cosmetic surgeons". Only plastic surgeons are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgeons.

Does smoking marijuana affect you after back surgery?

Absolutely - it affects your ability to heal properly.

Depending on the procedure (if there's bone involved or if it was just a micro-diskectomy), any smoker, whether it be tobacco or grass, will take longer to heal. In many cases when a fusion is involved, a bone growth stimulator may be ordered by the surgeon for the patient to be worn for the 3 months minimum it takes a normal person (non-smoker) to fully fuse bone.

The reason behind this is that smoking reduces the amount of oxygen available to your bloodstream, and it's that O2 rich blood that is key to bone and tissue healing. The lower your oxygen content, the longer it will take to heal. So even if you had a procedure not involving bone, you're still going to take longer to heal if you keep smoking grass, as it actually reduces the O2 in your system even more than tobacco does.

If you're smoking due to increased pain and the stuff your doctor gave you isn't cutting it, document your pain with a pain diary (you can get one at Painfoundation.org, or just make one yourself - formal ones are better though) over time so that you can show evidence that you're having pain that your meds aren't dealing with. Without it, you can just look like someone wanting stronger pain drugs, and trust me, you don't want that label, whether true or not. Raven
