All Walking Liberty silver "dollars" issued in recent years are actually bullion pieces containing one ounce of silver. Thus they're worth a small amount more than the spot price of silver, currently about $12 or $13 an ounce.

Be careful not to be thrown a curve by the fact that this design was previously used on half dollars issued from 1916 to 1947.

Please don't assume that every coin with a woman's face on it is Susan B. Anthony! U.S. coins at that time carried stylized images of MISS LIBERTY. In addition, no $1 coins were minted from 1905 to 1920 inclusive.

SBA dollars were struck in 1979 - 80 and again in 1999. All are only worth $1 each.

Turn your coin over and check the denomination on the back. It's most likely a quarter or half-dollar. There's more information at the Related Question.

Susan Brownell Anthony worked very hard for many equal rights causes. Her main was woman's suffrage, which was giving women the right to vote. She and Elizabeth Cady Stanton started the National Women's Suffrage Association. They worked very hard at it for 51 years. Shortly after her death, the nineteenth amendment, also known as the Anthony Amendment, gave women in the U.S. the right to vote everywhere. She also fought against slavery and to prohibit alcohol.

Uh, please don't assume that every woman appearing on a US coin is Susan B. Anthony! The woman pictured on your coin is Miss Liberty, as in "Statue of ..."

The Susan B. Anthony dollar was produced in 1979, 1980, 1981 and 1999. She could never have been on a dollar coin from the 1880s because

(1) she was very much alive at the time and

(2) she was despised by the male-dominated power structure due to her support of equal rights.

They're only worth face value unless you have an uncirculated or proof coin.

Feel free to spend any that you get in change. You'll be helping to reduce the need for dollar bills, which cost the government 6-10 times as much as coins over their circulation life cycle.

If this set is the 1980 Dollar Souvenir Set in a big Green envelope. This is the 3 coin SBA set with the P, D and S Mint marks. They are very common with an average retail value of $7.00.

Chances are, only a small premium over face value, but the bag must still be unopened. Very few coin collectors collect the Susan B Anthony series because most dislike the design. Uncirculated specimens sell for only face value plus fifteen cents or so, if even that. But the fact that the bag is still sealed might bring more interest. There really aren't many price guidelines to how much that would sell for, you'd just have to try to sell it and see how much demand there is.

That's not really a valid question because ANY coin can be used in ANY vending machine that's calibrated to accept it.

Dollar coins were introduced to help reduce the huge number of $1 bills being printed every year. However the Anthony design failed for a number of reasons, primarily because its design was flawed (ugly, too much like a quarter, etc.). In addition, the vending machine industry had been lobbying for a $1 coin so their machines didn't need bill-acceptors, but when the coin was introduced very few machines were ever converted to accept them so consumers couldn't use the coin as intended. Finally the government refused to stop printing $1 bills so the dollar coin was relegated to niche uses such as bus and trolley fareboxes.
