Swine Flu (H1N1/09)

The 2009 Pandemic Swine Flu, A-H1N1/09, the Type A influenza virus that was first identified in the early spring of 2009 in Mexico and then spread world wide to become a true Pandemic by June 2009. Different from other current seasonal strains of H1N1, and also not the same Swine Flu from prior epidemics or outbreaks (like in 1976), it is known by many different names in different places and settings, such as: H1N1, Novel H1N1, A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)v-like virus, la grippe porcine, The Mexican Flu, la epidemia, Schweinegrippe, and SOIV (Swine Origin Influenza Virus).

Is Swine Flu in corfu?

I Don't think so. But i wouldn't worry about it anyway, because it doesnt matter where you are now. Swine flu is no longer containable. In fact you have more chance of getting it outside of corfu.

Is getting flu shot safe while taking steroids?

If you mean the kind of steroids that are given by injection, in a joint or other body part, to work as a local anti-inflammatory agent and to relieve pain, or the kind given by IV in severe infections with sepsis and other complications, then it is possible that it could be used in the treatment of severe flu infections with complications. If you mean the steroids that are used by some athletes and body-builders to build up bulky muscles, or those used sometimes in treatment of hormonal conditions, then no.

Is the Swine Flu and SARS the same thing?

NO, SARS is bird-related, while the swine flu's... well swine related.

Should people with HIV get the H1N1 swine flu vaccine?

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have issued guidelines for this situation and they do recommend this preventive measure in some demographic groups. It is often the secondary pneumonia that ultimately causes the most severe responses to this viral infection in certain segments of the population and can be the complication that proves fatal in some. The following guidelines were published by CDC on June 9, 2009:

There are two types of pneumonia vaccine recommended for use in two demographic groups: the 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23) and the a 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV7). These guidelines apply to the use of the PPSV23 vaccine.

# It is recommended by the CDC that all adults aged 65 and older receive the PPSV23 Pneumonia vaccination.

# In the following age groups the CDC recommend the PPSV23 Pneumonia vaccination only if certain medical conditions exist--

Ages 2 through 64 only if one or more of these medical conditions exist:

* Chronic cardiovascular disease (congestive heart failure and cardiomyopathies) * Chronic pulmonary disease including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and emphysema * Diabetes mellitus * Alcoholism * Chronic liver disease, including cirrhosis * Cerebrospinal fluid leaks * Functional or anatomic asplenia including sickle cell disease and splenectomy * Immunocompromising conditions including HIV infection, leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease, multiple myeloma, generalized malignancy, chronic renal failure, nephrotic syndrome; those receiving immunosuppressive chemotherapy (including corticosteroids); and those who have received an organ or bone marrow transplant

3. Adults ages 19 through 64 who:

* Smoke cigarettes * Have Asthma

CDC recommendations regarding use of PCV7 Pneumonia vaccine:

"PCV7 is recommended for all children aged less than 5 years; national coverage among 19-35 month olds with 3 or more PCV7 doses is currently > 90% (National Immunization Survey, July 2007-June 2008)."

"While maintaining this high coverage is important, expanding the use of PCV7 to people aged ≥ 5 years is not indicated because circulation of the 7 serotypes included in the vaccine has declined substantially and disease caused by these serotypes is now uncommon."

What is the feminine of swine?

A young female pig (swine) is referred to as a "gilt" - until after her first pregnancy (or litter of pigs/piglets). After giving birth (parturition) from her first pregnancy, a female pig (swine) is thereafter referred to as a "sow".

What was the reason that swine flu has came first in Mexico?

It is not yet known exactly how it ended up in Mexico, but the latest investigation suggests that it originated in pigs in the US, probably Texas, at a pig farm and either an infected pig ended up in a herd in Mexico, or a farm worker went from the Texas pig farm to a Mexican pig farm and spread the virus that then began to be transmitted human to human. See the related questions below for more information.

Will hand sanitizer kill norovirus?

The facts and fiction re: alcohol based hand sanitizers. Unless the manufacturer is providing an independent lab test re: the two most common strains of norovirus (feline and murene), you should remain skeptical i.e. the kill claims. Murene strain is extraordinarily difficult to conduct tests for, and very very few manufacturers of hand sanitizers have been able to demonstrate that 62% alcohol could possibly be effective against Norovirus. Alcohol does not penetrate dirty hands. Alcohol evaporates in high temperatures. Alcohol breaks up when stored in high temperatures (which would suggest that it is rendered ineffective). There is a new product on the market, alcohol-free that comes with third party test results i.e. both strains of norovirus. Its very expensive--3x-4x any other hand sanitizer--but the financial cost of a norovirus outbreak on a cruise ship or a hotel is hundreds of thousands of dollars per day. Will hand sanitizers actually prevent a norovirus outbreak? That remains to be seen. Can hand sanitizers mitigate the spread of norovirus? Yes.

No. This treatment for the flu contains no ingredients that can give you the flu or any other infectious disease.

Should immuno-suppressed patients get the swine flu vaccine?

Yes, they are one of the groups at highest risk of catching the disease and of having more severe complications from the flu. As soon as the vaccine is made available to them, they are encouraged to get the vaccine.

They should not use the vaccines that contain the live attenuated viruses, however. This includes the nasal mist that is approved in the US for use in healthy people aged 2 - 49. The flu shots for A-H1N1/09 that are approved for use in the US are made from inactivated viruses and are therefore the ones recommended for immunocompromised people. Always check with your health care professional to be sure that you are a candidate for vaccines, since each patient's care can vary due to their disease process or condition that has left them with suppressed immune systems.

People who are immuno-suppressed may have a less than optimum response to the vaccines due to their condition or their medications, therefore, they should continue to practice all the precautions for avoiding infection even after they have received a vaccination, just in case they are not fully protected by the vaccination.

People who are in close contact with, and caregivers for, the immuno-compromised patients should also avoid using the live attenuated virus vaccines, since there is a small, but possible, chance for the virus in the live vaccine to revert or mutate to one capable of making the immuno-suppressed person ill if they are exposed to the person vaccinated with the live variety of vaccine soon after they are vaccinated.

Is having a body temperature of 96.3 F and flu like symptoms a problem?

It may well mean you have the flu. Some viruses will cause a lowered temperature. The A-H1N1/09 virus usually causes an elevated temperature but that doesn't mean that you don't have the flu because yours is currently low. See the related question below about the symptoms of swine flu and follow the link to the web sites with self evaluation online tools that may help you know. In the mean time, assume you have it and follow the precautions to avoid the spread of the flu in related questions below.

Can you take Tamiflu with mucinex DM?

There is no manufacturer-listed drug incompatibility between these two medicines, and the combination is often recommended by physicians.

Can you get Swine Flu from sheets and bedding?

It is possible if you are in the bed with in 12 hours after someone with the flu has been there touching the sheets and bedding. Different time frames are found referenced about the length of time viruses can remain viable on surfaces outside a living host, but for most environments it is most often quoted that they can "live" for 24 to 48 hours on nonporous environmental surfaces and less than 12 hours on porous surfaces before becoming inert.

What are the disadvantages of swine production?

Limit feeding in swine production is the practice of feeding a specific amount of food over a set period of time. ?æThe limit feeding amount for a breeding herd is between 4 to 6 pounds per pig.?æ

How many days should you take off work when you have the flu?

Time off varies on the prolonged severity of the illness. You should stay home as long as you are experiencing any symptoms. It has also been suggested you can still be contagious for up to a few days after symptoms have disappeared. The longer your work will allow you to stay home, the better.

Is 38.6 temp high?

A temperature of 38.6C is just over 101F, and would be considered low grade fever. The normal body temperature of 98.6F is equal to 37.0C.

Equivalent temperatures in the human body in Fahrenheit and Celsius measurement:

99F = 37.22C

100F = 37.78C

101F = 38.33C

102F = 38.89C

103F = 39.44C

104F = 40.00C

105F = 40.56C

Did Swine Flu come to Florida?

The swine flu IS in Miami just as it is in probably almost every state. The swine flu was transmitted from Mexico and has brought into the states most likely because some of the people came here hoping they would be safe. The people who were infected most likely didn't know because the symptons probably didn't kick in.

So the swine flu is in Miami and can get more serious soon.

How Swine Flu attack human beings?

The so-called "swine flu", more correctly called an H1N1 Flu, causes influenza in humans.

The H1N1 flu seems to severely affect more people between the ages of 4 and 30, and fewer of the over-60 group, than does the seasonal flu. It also seems to come less often with a fever, and perhaps to last a bit longer.

But basically it is influenza.

Why does the Swine Flu spread so fast around the world?

It is believed to be because this is an entirely new virus that people have never been exposed to before at any time in history. It is unusual in that it has the genetic components from swine, birds, and humans. Most viruses have been around since before recorded history in forms that were similar enough to each other, even though there have been many mutations, that our bodies, either through our inherited immunizations, or from everyday exposure to less virulent versions of the viruses, were able to prevent them from causing much disease except in immunocompromised individuals or the weak and infirm. We are more vulnerable to having the virus get a foothold and infect us when our immune systems have not been primed to recognize the virus in time to stop it before incubation allows it to shed and infect others.

Because it could infect so many people so quickly, it had lots of hosts to create more and more of it and carry it from place to place and to person to person and that allowed it to spread very quickly. Luckily, so far, it is mild in the symptoms it causes.

How many times should you take H1N1 flu shot?

There are different kinds of H1N1 viruses, you can catch the exact same kind only once in your lifetime. The Type A, H1N1/09 influenza virus that caused the pandemic is different than other H1N1 viruses. So you could get infected by more than one type of H1N1 in your lifetime, but not the exact same Type A, H1N1/09.

Usually your body recognizes a very similar type of flu as the same and can prepare defenses for it quickly because of the prior immune response to the other one, but if different enough you will have to start over with a new immune response that allows time for the virus to make you feel ill before you can begin to "kill" the new type.

The answer is that you can catch the same one only once, but you can still catch all the other H1N1 viruses (one time each) after that.

How long does the flue virus live?

It depends if the food is frozen, cooled, or room temperature. At room temperature on meat, it could last up to two weeks. For longer periods, the virus needs a living host (animal or plant) for "shelter" and to reproduce more viruses.

But you can not get swine flu from eating infected foods that have been cooked (even pork). Influenza virus is destroyed by heat of 167-212°F (75-100°C). If handling raw meat that has been contaminated (or other foods) use the usual precautions for raw meat handling. Wash hands and avoid cross-contamination of surfaces and utensils. If you see someone cough or sneeze directly on foods or otherwise contaminate them with viruses on their hands, it is best to just discard the food if it can not be heated to the temperatures to destroy the virus as indicated above.

When in doubt, throw it out.
