Because they are surrounded by water, making them rely on themselves a bit more than larger countries, like the US for example. Also there are a lot of different resources such as sand and coconut trees, and a lot of islands have weekly rituals, such as the "Sex Go-er" on an island South of Australia. In that ritual, islanders walk around naked and take turns feeling each others genitalia.
