This could be due to vaginal dryness. Try using some KY Jelly on a tampon and see if insertion is better after doing so. If not go see your GP and ask for a test as it could be something else which is causing you pain when inserting a tampon.

No that should be fine! When you first start your period it's very weird and doesn't have a regular time of the month. Also your flow will change quite often. If you still have your period for longer than two weeks and it is still really heavy I would recommend telling your parents or doctor is possible but parents first!

They are very small and fit in your hand so when you go to the bathroom to insert it, no one will know you have a tampon. Also you have to pull the applicator stick out until it clicks, then you are ready to go!
