How do you fix a broken DVD?

User Avatar
You don't. Unless by broken you mean scratched, then you could try cleaning the disk in hopes that it will work. You can get rid of scratches, but you can't put broken parts of a DVD together. In more detail: The data on a DVD (or a CD or Blu-ray disc) is contained on a layer of material between the label and the thick, clear plastic part. If you hold the disc up to a light source, look at the shiny side, and you can see through it where the label was scratched or broken, the data that was in that spot has been obliterated with no chance of recovery. Scratches to the clear plastic that don't damage the data can be polished out, or in an extreme case can be resurfaced (probably more expensive than buying several new DVDs). In the REALLY extreme case that the contents of the DVD are extremely valuable, it might be cost effective to send it to a forensic lab to recover whatever data was not damaged when the DVD was broken.

What are the consequences of running a hot server room and why?

User Avatar
Hot server rooms will cause the premature failure of hardware components such as hard drives and CPUs. A hot room will make it more difficult for servers' cooling systems (usually fans) to keep components from thermal expansion, which begins to cause errors and crashes.

What changes do you foresee in the next five years?

User Avatar
Consumers, and businesses, will become much more mobile, and the line between people and technology will become blurred as no-touch interfaces are perfected. The majority of people in developed, and rapidly developing countries will be connected 24/7 as just about everything we interact with becomes a computer. All our computers in our homes, our cars, on our person, and even objects on the street will interact with our smartphones and with each other, seamlessly. On the horizon: Nanotechnology will become better and cheaper to produce. Bionics will be vastly improved, making life better for people with disabilities by replacing lost and damaged body parts and allowing them fuller, more "normal" lives. We will start powering our mobile devices with both solar and kinetic energy, using the natural motion of our bodies. Passwords replaced by retinal scans and voice print or finger print recognition. 3D printers will get better, cheaper, and faster, creating a booming business in downloadable patterns. This is all based on technologies we know. There will be new technologies, and new advances we haven't even imagined yet.

What is a primary partition and an extended partition?

User Avatar
David is partially correct. Yes, we are talking about terms from back in the days of MS-DOS, DR-DOS, and PC-DOS. However, the terms of Primary, Extended, and Logical Partitions were used in those forms. The Primary partition was the first partition on the drive and was the only bootable partition on the drive. The Extended partition was the partition that consumed the rest of the drive. Traditionally, the largest hard drive that could be used was 30 megabytes. So, if one had a 120 megabyte hard drive such as the Seagate ST4144R (an RLL hard drive that was the cousin of the Seagate ST4096 MFM hard drive which had a capacity of only 80 megabytes), one would make a primary partition formatted as bootable under DOS and sized up to 30 megabytes and then the rest of the drive would be created as an extended partition that could be chopped up into usable partitions of up to 30 megabytes in size each. The only restriction was that there could be no more than 23 logical drives since that would consume the rest of the alphabet D: through Z:. (CD-ROM drives were not common back then as they were still in their infancy, so no drive letters were reserved for them but A: and B: were still reserved, and at least A: was often used for the floppy drive.) Back when I was still using MS-DOS 6.22 around 1993, I had a Maxtor 7546A IDE hard drive that had about 540 megabytes of storage and, though I could have used larger partition sizes by that time due to improvements that had come to DOS by then, I still kept the partitions at 30 megabytes each for most efficient use of the space. (This has to do with the cluster size that is used by the system to allocate hard drive space, a topic that is not germane to this answer, so if anyone is curious, feel free to drop me a line and I will explain.) As such, I had eighteen drives on the machine with C: being the boot drive/Primary partition and drives D: through T: being for data, installation of programs and games, and for keeping my wife out of the projects on which I was working. (She had a habit of deleting files she didn't recognize, such as anything that had an extension of .pas or .c)

How can technology hinder us?

User Avatar
There are no negative things about technology, just negative people and negative use of technology. However, sometimes it gets us in trouble. All technology is good when properly used in the best interest of all life. Well, I should write some comment which might oppose some of our friend's contribution earlier on. Technology nowadays restrict us from two things: one is social life and another one is creativity. WHy I say these? Well, if you jump into the internet very well known as Google, you could find designs for many things which might be your homework or any office work, which might make you lazy sometimes to copy-and-paste that idea into your work and not forgetting how Facebook is impacting someone's social life of interaction. This is what I think.

What are the symptoms of a bad motherboard?

User Avatar
Well, there are some obvious ones like it doesn't work, slows your computer down, bad ports, like bad USB ports, old wires. There is a lot that can go wrong and cause it to go bad those are just some of the obvious ones. Also if you look on the capacitors and the top is bulging or split and stuff leaking out then the board is bad. You might also detect the smell of something burning like insulation or arid smell. When turning on the PC you may hear 1 Long and 1 Short Beeps. In general beep codes' rules, it means that your motherboard may be broken. As mother board constitutes of all the external device component like input and output device like mouse, keybord, USB, LAN and wireless card and if these device find it difficult to find their device driver and often found without driver after reinstalltion or fomatting of file system or if it is compatible with all the file system these all symtoms suggest that mother board is not of a good quality.

What does AV input output mean?

User Avatar
A-Audio V-Visual Input is like it sounds, it is data coming in, it may be into a computer (from a camera) or into a projector. Output is the opposite, it is data being sent out, it may be from a computer to a projector or from a camera into the computer. An example of the chain described about would be... Camera Outputs data Computer receives that data as input Computer processes data Computer sends out data as output Projector receives data as input Projector projects data as image These rules of input/output (I/O) are applicable to many areas of technology. additional: AV input/output usually means there are 4 plugs, one for each of three colors and audio. Some outputs will have 2 audio and one composite video.. always check the doc carefully

Why are there gaps in pavement?

User Avatar
When pavement is laid they leave gaps in the pavement so that the slabs can expand and contract with the change in temperature. Without the gaps the concrete would buckle when it gets too hot or crack when it contracts from extreme cold. The gaps are filled with a resilient material. Modern pavement blocks are connected with pins to keep the edges in line. When solids increase in temperature the atoms in it move further apart; so their length and volume also increases. Dropping temperatures cause shrinking. The same principle also applies for buildings and bridges. Bridges and buildings have expansion joints because the steel supports, concrete, and framework do expand and contract differently with temperature changes. For a short time, best practice did not require the expansion joints, assuming that the cracking was under control with improved concrete materials. However, this new pavement buckled on many interstate highways during summer heat waves, stopping traffic. Extremely expensive retrofitting has been necessary nationwide to cut out yard-long sections, drill holes, install expansion joints, pour new concrete, and repeat every few hundred feet. Ice is a major problem for concrete when it seeps into the concrete along openings for the reinforcing steel and cracks that haven't been caulked properly. As the water freezes, it expands and breaks the concrete as well as rusting the reinforcing steel.

What are windows to earths interior?

User Avatar
Mantle-derived xenoliths. The magma is mantle and/or subducted-crust-derived. Xenoliths come from the country rock through which the magma rises, so really it's the magma (solidifying as igneous rock) that's the window. For greater depths, seismic analysis is the window.
