Thomas Paine took a great role in the revolutionary war sinse his pamphlet, "common Sense" that sold over 100,00 copies in the first three months triggered a realization in the colonies of all that the British had been doing to them, including taxes, laws, acts and overall controll of the colonies. This inspirational piece of writing later was what convinced the Continental Congress to write the Declaration of Independence and send it to the British declaring final independence and separation. Without Thomas Paine and his beautiful writing we might still be under English rule to this day.

This established a baseline goal on what was expected of a successful government. Common Sense was one of the main reasons the Revolution took place, because many American's realized that they have a right to speak up.

One of them is when he says "Say not that this is revenge".

At the time Common Sense was published, the people of the 13 colonies were by no means unanimous in their wish for freedom from England. Paine (born in England) wrote "Common Sense" as an argument in favor of seeking independence from England, and it's well-written style changed many minds, and helped to unite the colonists in the cause of independence.

He did many things, writing was probably his most important. Paine wrote The Case of The Officers of Excise, Common Sense, Rights of Man and many more. He served as a secretary, held interests in science, worked on an iron bridge and smokeless candle, sailed, was an excise officer, was in the Continental Army, and helped write a new constitution for France.

Thomas Paine believed in the cause of liberty and used his gift of the written word to inspire all Americans to take up arms, and throw the shackles of the British government. As an advocate of Democratic Peace Theory, Paine believed that gaining independence, and establishing a democratic government was the best thing many of the colonists would ever do in their lives.

Yes, he was. He wrote a pamphlet entitled "Common Sense" urging the American Colonists to declare independence from England.

I don't know that you could call them 'ground breaking' as there was no true originality in them, they simply translated current political philosophy into real world application(s) or examples. Most of the theory behind them were taken from other more formal books on the subject. If anything Mr. Paine had the ability to translate these theories into current real world application, and convey this / these, ideals in a simplified language that a greater portion of the populous could understand.

He had said that citizens, not kings and queens, should make laws.

By writing the book common sense he opened colonies eyes to the tyrannical acts of the king.

Thomas Paine was born in Thetford (in England) and stayed there until he was around 18 years old. Afterwards he went to London, probably due to the fact that corsetmakers (that was his job- worked as an apprentice for his father, Joseph Pain) were having to endure a "declining market" and maybe because he wanted a little adventure...

He believed that the American colonies had the right to be free from the British and so his idea of freedom helped the Declaration of Independence be formed.

He specifically attacked the idea of a monarchy and hereditary aristocracy. He goes on to say it is absurd than an island governs a continent in his most prominent work, Common Sense.

He also was a strong supporter of freethinking. He is controversially known for attacking institutionalized religion, and advocating deism. All of this comes mostly from his 3 part book -- The Age of Reason (1794- 1807, released in separate parts).

Another important belief, shown in Common Sense and Rights of Man (supporting the French Revolution), is that a government should always protect the citizenry and their rights and interests. He advocated revolution and independence if necessary.

During the Revolutionary War, the colonists split into sides. They were either loyalists (they wanted to stay under the King of England's rule), patriots (they wanted their own government), or neutralists (they didn't really care). Thomas Paine then wrote a short book called Common Sense, which was literally about common sense. He said logically that the colonists were being treated unfairly by the King and it was common sense that they shouldn't have to put up with it. This ultimately ended up convincing many of the neutralists and some of the loyalists as well to join the patriots' side. Without the extra support, America may not have become what it is today. That was before the Revolutionary War to provide justification to neurtral or undecided people to revolt against Britain. He also wrote The American Crisis to reprimand soldiers at Valley Forge who were quitting the army because of the cold. This pamphlet motivated them to stay strong so that their children could have peace.

Thomas Paine invented an iron bridge, although "invented" might not be the correct term. A new feature of this bridge was that it had no piers supporting it in mid-river. A scale model had been created and tested, but it was never built.

In the life of Paine those parties didn't exist. There were no Democrats or Republicans until 1860 a hundred years after Paine.

The American Crisis is a collection of articles written by Thomas Paine during the American Revolutionary War. The pamphlets were contemporaneous with early parts of the American Revolution, during a time when colonists needed inspiring works. They were written in a language that the common man could understand, and represented Paine's liberal philosophy.
