Is an under active thyroid common for a 16 year old?

If a teenager has a thyroid condition it sometimes won't be diagnosed until they are going through puberty. Adolescents who develop hypothyroidism have the same signs and symptoms as adults. As the Mayo Clinic suggests they may also experience poor growth which results in short stature, delayed development of permanent teeth, delayed puberty, and poor mental development. The goal of treating hypothyroidism in teenagers is to help restore the thyroid to a normal function by getting the gland to produce normal levels of thyroid hormones. Talk with your child's pediatrician regarding how common an under active thyroid is for a teenager, symptoms, and family health history. Also find out if the pediatrician has any recommendations about seeing a pediatric endocrinologist.

What is the relationship between metabolism and the thyroid?

The thyroid gland plays a crucial role in regulating metabolism through the production of hormones, primarily thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). These hormones influence the rate at which the body converts food into energy, affecting processes such as heart rate, temperature regulation, and overall energy expenditure. An underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) can lead to a slower metabolism, while an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) can accelerate metabolic processes. Thus, thyroid function is essential for maintaining metabolic balance in the body.

What is the parathyroid glands functions?

The parathyroid gland produces parathyroid hormone (PTH), which regulates the blood calcium level. When blood calcium is low, PTH is secreted and stimulates the digestion of bone tissue by osteoclasts, this releases calcium from the bone into the bloodstream. Calcitonin has the opposite effect of PTH, and is released from the thyroid gland when blood calcium is too high.

Can a person take Fentanyl if they are on thyroid medicine and blood pressure medicine?

This is a very complicated question.Thyroid med can increase your pulse rate, possibly B/P as well.B/P meds are to lower B/p. You do not say if Fentanyl is oral or patches. Either way, this tends to lower B/P. This can be a problematical situation.

You haven't told me if same doc prescribed all these meds.If you see more than one doc[like hmo or clinic], take ALL meds with you to EVERY appt. If you are using Fentanyl patches you must follow directions VERY PRECISELY!

Best bet: Make an appt and take all meds with you. Talk to doc. When yyou get meds, read and keep all info sheets.I keep mine stuck to fridge for ez access, so in case of bad reaction, my husband can just hand them to EMT's

Is Depo-Provera and thyroid disease linked together?

I don't have an answer for this question, but this is a very important question that needs to be studied. I was on depo-provera for several years. Since I stopped taking it a few years ago, because I was having too many side effect symptoms, even after a few years of not taking it I am still having several of the same symptoms as if I was still taking the depo-provera. I have not yet been diagnosed with a thyroid disorder, but I have also read that there is plenty of evidence to support that depo-provera can effect thyroid testing producing possible false negatives. I have also read about several women that are seeking help trying to find out what is wrong with them even a few years after taking or while taking this contraceptive. Real effective studies need to be done on this correlation, because it is unfair to several women to be swept under the rug and going untreated, as well as way uninformed of what long term, or even short term effects of this drug can really do to you. I even think that the drug companies and doctor's don't even really know either. I also believe that it is way unfair and unprofessional for medical professionals to automatically tell a patient that it is impossible for them to be having problems caused by this contraceptive. Doctors should be listening and reporting this stuff to the FDA every time a patient has a complaint so that this can be effectively studied.
