How do you get rid of mites on my dogs skin?

Most mites are not terribly interested in biting humans and would much prefer to snack on a dead bird or a juicy plant. If, however, some pesky mites do get into your house, getting rid of the little pests might be difficult, but treating their tiny bites is fairly easy. Follow these steps.

1) Spread an anti-itch cream over the bitten area.

2) Do not scratch the bitten area. Scratching will only cause more pain, and

might even cause a skin infection, which could need medical treatment.

3) Visit your doctor if the bites don't clear within a week. If they persist, they

could be a rash or other skin irritation.

4) Look into treatments to rid your house of the mites. This will typically

involve getting rid of the pests that mites live on.

Pesticides will kill the mites, but they won't fix your problem unless you use them in conjunction with rodent or bird control.

Does a tick have a heart?

Insects do not have lungs, they breath through spiracles and trachea - small holes leading to small tubes that deliver oxygen directly to cells using diffusion. They don't have blood the way we do, that is, their internal fluid carries no oxygen to cells, it merely circulates nutrients, hormones, immune cells, etc. They have a rudimentary heart that just sloshes the fluid around in their open interior, there are no blood vessels. Their brain is just an enlarged ganglia and can store about as much information as one of the older computer chips. They have accessory ganglia that aid eating, walking, flying and reactions to stimuli so the brain doesn't have to do all the work. So, you're right, they are about 90% involuntary behavior and have only about 10% volition. you welcome~Trisha~

What do snake ticks look like?

after getting swarmed with "seed ticks" yesterday, unfortunately i can answer this. they look like tiny seeds, you know those little black (closer to brown or red) grass seeds that come off on your pants while walking through the woods or grass. but watch closely and you'll see them moving. and eventually they bite down and "ouch". i had about 50 on myself after a run through the woods yesterday and it's no joke. we had to pull each one off with tweezers. today i look as if i contracted the chicken pox.

How long can a tick live?

I have been researching this question myself. According to a local vet and every internet source I can find, it is not possible for a tick to burrow under the skin. However, I actually saw otherwise.

We found a stray 5-month-old puppy who was covered in ticks. We took her to the vet and gave her Frontline. We picked well over 100 ticks off of her, alive and dead. She had lots of ticks in her armpits, but we also found some bumps. They were fairly large raised areas with a black circle in the middle. I questioned friends and family as to whether these could be ticks. I also called the vet. One of the techs told me that ticks would not be under the skin, so we just watched the areas to see what happened.

Five days later, we had gotten most of the dead ticks off of her. However, the bumps were still there and still the same. We finally decided to check them out. We squeezed the bumps, and they began to ooze a clear pus. As we kept squeezing, the black thing started to emerge. Once we could, we grabbed it with tweezers and pulled it out. It was, in fact, a dead tick. We found two others just like this.

There are other suspect areas, but we are continuing to monitor them.

I just returned from camping with the cub scouts in Virginia Beach. My son woke up Saturday morning with a new mole on his neck. When I looked closely at it, it was a tick, but only the back 1/3 was above the skin. The rest was visible as a dark area just under the skin. A nurse we were camping with looked at it and said "emergency room". We went to the hospital where it took two PA's and two nurses over half an hour to extract the tick using tweezers and hydrogen peroxide. They said the hydrogen peroxide was to make the tick back out as it would deprive him of oxygen once it started to foam. The only problem was that the tick mouth was so deeply embedded that the hydrogen peroxide couldn't get that deep. They ended up pulling it out in pieces. This was after they shot pain killer into the wound. He ended up with a tick sized wound on his neck. This was on Halloween morning and the tick was on Joey's neck near his jugular vein so this became known as the Vampire Tick Attack of North Landing Park.

Are bed bugs and ticks the same?

Bedbugs is a species that prefers to feed off of human blood or other warmblooded animals.

Ticks will still feed off of warmblooded mammals, birds, etc. but will also feed from cold-blooded reptiles or amphibians.

That's the only difference i can think of :)
