How do you maintain a lathe?

Metal lathes should be cleaned down continually during its shift to removed swarf build up - The saddle and headstock should be cleaned regularly especially if they are to be out of action for a period of time i.e. holidays. All carriage areas should be oiled and cleaned as should the bed.

Belts should be replaced at least annually and inspected monthly for wear

The tail stock should be in place when the late is not in use to protect it, and its end bearing oiled frequently. Any checks should be inspected to ensure jaws are free moving and unobstructed and chucks checked for signs of wear and replaced if damaged

All handles and their gauges and screws should be inspected periodically for wear

electrical connections should be protected form water/coolant and damages from sharp objects

What is a right hand knife tool lathe?

it is a tool used on a lathe to cut metal from right to left

What is clearance angle of tool in lathe?

γ Back-off angle or clearance angle L w Length of the workpiece (not shown.

What tools do tool makers use?

Dress makers use sewing machines these days and some use needles and thread. But my question is what did they use back in the day?

What are the major part of a lathe machine?

Distance support the effectuation for retentive the tailstock and

carriage, which slideway along the slipway, in alignment with the

permanently involved headstock

The headstock is situated on the operator's unexpended end of the

lathe bed. It contains the main spindle and oil thing and

the gearing mechanism for obtaining varied shaft speeds

and for transmitting index to the consumption and threading

execution. The headstock mechanism is driven by an

auto travel adjoining either to a track or block scheme or to

a meshed system. The water mandrel is mounted on bearings in

the headstock and is hardened and specially view to fit

distinct lathe retentive devices. The mandrel has a difficulty

through its intact length to conciliate unsound workplaces.

The play in the spout of the mandril ordinarily has a canonic

The tailstock is located on the opposite end of the lathe

from the headstock. It supports one end of the acquisition when

machining between centers, supports desire pieces held in the

eats, and holds different forms of division tools, much as drills,

reamers, and taps. The tailstock is mounted on the structure and is

designed to be clamped at any component along the shipway. It has a

sliding spindle that is operated by a script roller and clamped

in office by substance of a spindle clamp. The tailstock may be

adjusted laterally (toward or absent from the opportunist) by

adjusting screws. It should be unclamped from the slipway

before any pass adjustments are made, as this present grant the

tailstock to be stirred freely and preclude misconduct to the passing

advance screws.

The rig includes the apron, compel, bipinnate ease,

traverse foil, means business, and the stinging agency. It sits crossways the

lathe construction and in confront of the lathe bed. The answer of the

pushchair is to bear and relocation the cutting tool. It can be rapt

by side or by force and can be clamped into item with a

protection nut. The notch carries the sweep slide and the

pinnated death. The cover travel is mounted on the dovetail

construction on the top of the notch and is touched sanction and forth at

90° to the mechanism of the lathe by the affliction trough further revolve. The

grounds screw can be side or country activated. A provender reversing

lever, placed on the stroller or headstock, can be used to

cause the pushchair and the crosswise move to opposition the path

of travel. The increase position is mounted on the sweep glissando and

can be swiveled and clamped at any seek in a crosswise

form. The pinnate position is used extensively in keen centre

tapers and angles for lathe centers. The piercing tool and means

bearer are secured in the means collection which is mounted directly

to the bilobed quietus. The forestage contains the train and inclose

clutches which transfer change from the provide rod or encourage

propeller to the rig and meet glide.

Help AND MAINTENANCE OF LATHES

Lathes are highly true machine tools premeditated to operate

around the timepiece if right operated and preserved. Lathes

must be greased and checked for improvement before

work. Wrong lubrication or release nuts and bolts can

entity extravagant indispose and desperate operative conditions.

The lathe shipway are exactitude fix surfaces and staleness not

be used as tables for different tools and should be kept plum of

grit and ground. The take screw and train should be checkered

oftentimes for any metal chips that could be lodged in the

gearing mechanisms. Mar apiece lathe preceding to calculation for

any nonexistent parts or unsmooth shears pins. Mean to the operator's

manual before attempting to modify any lathe. Freshly installed

lathes or lathes that are transported in motile

vehicles should be decent leveled before any computation to

prevent movement and wobble. Any lathes that are transported

out of a formula browse surround should be invulnerable from

rubble, exuberant passion, and very snappy conditions. Locomote the

lubricator oft if excavation in soiled conditions. In hot

working areas, use repair to abstain overheating the travel or

prejudicial any seals. Operate the lathe at slower speeds than

median when working in cold environments.

What tool cuts new threads for bolts or screws?

A thread tapping tool (some uneducated people may call it a 'tap'). This is a'T' handle tool that comes in 4 sizes and the lower leg of the T has a gripper to hold thread tools a bit like drill bits. These are extremely hard steel and are very precisely made and come in a huge array of sizes to suit all bolts.

Difference between diamond mesh lath and rib lath?

Diamond mesh lath and rib lath are both types of metal lath used in construction for plastering and stucco applications, but they have distinct features. Diamond mesh lath has a diamond-shaped pattern that provides better plaster bonding and flexibility, making it ideal for curved surfaces. Rib lath, on the other hand, features raised ribs that enhance structural strength and support heavy plaster applications, making it suitable for more demanding environments. Ultimately, the choice between the two depends on the specific requirements of the project.

What is a lathe turner?

A woodturner is a woodworker who makes one, or both, of two things: vessels or spindles. Vessels can be bowls, dishes, submarine propeller shaft bearings (they used to be made from a wood called Lignum Vitae, a strong, heavy, oily wood that lasted longer in the ocean than any metal did) and other useful items. Spindles can be porch columns, stair rail parts, baseball bats...

How will you prevent chattering in a lathe work?

Preventing chattering of the workpiece is a combination of the right cutting tool type for the specific job (sometimes a smaller radius cutting tip can solve the problem), right spindle speed and at times the right feed. The center height of the tool is also critical and must not be above center height, but rather slightly lower than. The workpiece can also be gripped deeper inside the chuck. If a tail stock is used, shorten the protruding quill to the shortest possible length and lock the tail stock lever.

In the end it all comes down to experience. It is always better to ask an experienced turner or machinist to try and rectify the problem while physically looking at the process with his/her own eyes.

Power-kraft metal working lathe 10 dia and about 30 to 32 in working Length I can't find a model number where would it be I am looking for the carrage screw and the D nut for the cross feed?

The "Power Kraft" line of tools was sold by Montgomery Ward stores.

Your lathe was made by the Logan company for Wards.

They are fine lathes, far sturdier and more accurate than most of the

'home shop' types, imho.

Logan is still in business, and parts are available. Google "Logan lathe" for all the info you'll ever need.

hth, Steve

edit: the serial number is stamped on the front rail of the bed at the far right end

Where can I find a Face plate for a Power Craft wood lath?

Oneway makes them. What you must do is determine the diameter of the spindle and the number of threads per inch it has. Once you know that, you can order a faceplate.
