Is the trumpet in the woodwind family?

No, trombones are a part of the Brasswind family.

How does a trumpet sound the way it does?

When you buzz into the mouthpiece of a trumpet, the vibrations travel through the tubing of the trumpet. The sound is amplified by the bell. When you press down a valve on the trumpet, you make the pitch lower.

Sometimes trumpets sound different if the bell has a big dent or has been dropped. When this happens the sound waves that travel through the trumpet can't travel in the smooth path they would if the trumpet was taken care of.

Why is brass used to make a trumpet?

Brass is a rust-resistant metal compound that was relatively easily and inexpensively obtained by our ancestors, polishes easily, is malleable and has interesting musical properties at various thicknesses. Brass is comparatively light-weight compared to the other metals historically available.

It should be noted that in modern times saxophones have been made of other materials, namely fiberglass. These instruments do not have the same tonal qualities as brass saxophones, and so are not widely used for anything other than training.

Does the trumpet normally play solo or in groups?

In a band, take jazz for example, a trumpet solo can be a great experience to listen to. You can play it solo but eventually a musical group will use it.

I have heard trumpets played solo and they are a magnificent instrument after a required time of study and practice.

E.F. Durand isnt a bad company but not a good company. Their musical instruments are more for a cheap buy. I bought an E.F. Durand Bb rotary valve cornet but it doesnt seem bad. It looks kind of cheap so it may dent easily but other than that it plays just fine. I would say they are a so so company not bad but not the best.

Can you get a trumpet wet?

Can you use Vaseline on a trumpet slide?

In a pinch, yes. Make sure it's plain though, nothing with fragrance or other additives. If the slides are being manually used during any performance then it might not be wise to use vaseline as this can make the slide (normally of the 3rd valve) a little cumbersome try a light oiling with valve oil (this is oil specific for the brass family valves)

What is the range of the trumpet?

Theoretically, the range of the trumpet is limited only by the person playing it. However, for a typical trumpet player, the lower end of the range is the F#/Gb below Low C (Concert Bb). The upper range of the trumpet is as high as you can play, but most trumpet players can reach High C (two octaves above low C) relatively comfortably with practice.

Is a tuba a brass?

Did the trumpet evolve out of another instrument?

The trumpet originated as a single tube that had a mouthpiece at one end and a horn at the other. This enables you to get a number of notes by changing the position of your lips in the mouthpiece. These different notes are called harmonics. The actual notes would depend on the length of the tubing. To make it easier to use it was bent into a shape like a bugle rather than a straight horn, although these continued to be used by heralds for royal events and for use on horseback for hunting the bugle was more popular.

As you can only get the harmonics for the particular length of pipe, you were limited to the tunes you could play. This led to the introduction of valves that added in additional bits of pipe. The first valve adds one full tone, the second valve adds half a tone and the third valve adds a tone and a half. This meant that trumpets were able to play the full chromatic scale.

An interesting fact about the harmonics is that the higher you play, the closer together the harmonics become, so as you go higher there are a range of different valve combinations that will give you the same note. This means that some jazz trumpeters can play melodies without using the valves, if they play high enough.

Piccolo Trumpets are made from a very short length of pipe and as a result have a fourth valve to enable it to go a bit lower. Another variation of the valves we have today are the rotary valves commonly found on French Horns, which were used on early trumpets or the Cornett which used a similar mouthpiece to a trumpet but had holes drilled in it, a bit like a woodwind instrument that enabled the harmonics to be altered in the same way as a woodwind instrument. Although not technically a trumpet, is required the same embrochure so is played in a similar way.

What is the mouthpiece of the trumpet called?

You answered your own question - in part. The part of the saxophone that you blow into is called a mouthpiece. There are many different brands, makes and models of mouthpieces. They can be very expensive. The small piece of cane on a saxophone mouthpiece is called a reed. Reeds are also available in various brands and strengths to choose from. Adolph Sax considered the saxophone both a "Brasswind" (Instruments made of brass) and a "Woodwind" (wind instruments that are blown and are not considered brasswinds). When a conductor asks for the "Reeds to play" he/she usually intends for the woodwinds to respond. So sometimes the term "reed" is confused, since it is synonymous for the cane on the mouthpiece or the slang used to distinguish a group of instruments. The other important part of the mouthpiece is called the "Ligature". It is the device that holds the reed in place - again there are many makes and models to choose from for this device. A saxophones mouthpiece, reed and ligature all effect the sound the player will make. Most Jazz Pro's refer to these parts together as their "set up".
