Ya.. helps you die sooner. The above seems like a pat answer to an extremely complex question. I smoked for 25 yrs before quitting only to find my autoimmune system attacking my colon with bleeding ulcerative colitis (UC) 14 months after quitting in 2000. Hospitalized and left to prednizone and remicade infussions monthly, I asked my GI doctor about the connection between cigarette smoking and UC. Because cigarettes are considered taboo in the medical community for reasons understood, he basically told me, yes, there is something in the "smoke" that keeps the autoimmune system from attacking. My choices were quality over quantity. In other words, by resuming smoking, I could live out my life without my body attacking itself, however, I would most likely shorten my life span. I decided the risk was worth a better quality of life and resumed smoking in 2002. To this date, I have not had one bout with UC and my GI checkups show it remains in remission. Tough choice but it was the one for me. Most people find these stories of smoking actually helping to be a tall tale. But a quick "google" search of the words Ulcerative Colitis and Smoking will bring back more hits than one would think possible.

Stomach Ulcers are caused by the Helicobactor Pylori Bacteria & are not caused by stress or drinking or any thing that you ingest, however IF you have an Ulcer, Many, many things can make the symptoms worse Especially Alcohol, Spicy food & many over the counter drugs, These things produce excess stomach acid which irritates & inflames the ulcer often making it bleed. If left untreated for too long an Ulcer will burst or perforate the stomach lining causing internal bleeding & or hemorrhaging which can be fatal. You must take a course of specific Antibiotics for up to 3 months to cure an ulcer & you must stick to a specific dietary regimen until the ulcer is healed. Aspirin is acidic & will exacerbate the symptoms of an Ulcer so it should be avoided until the ulcer is cured.

If it is active, in treatment, or untreatable, then yes; it will disqualify you from service.

Aviod: Spicy , gassey spices and vegetables. No sausages hotdogs or food in that type of casing with that type of filling. Aviod Highly concetrated bottled juice beverages always dilute with water. Aviod brown rice mixtures. Corn is ok but wouldn't recommend it. You might wind up with another problem. Its kinda like going to a mechanic sometimes. Aviod vegetables like celery and radishes.

OK things: Oatmeal, eggs, pastas, bananas, broths, low grizzle meats, the softer the meat, the easier it is for your stomach to digest it. Water and lots of it, always clears your pipes. Seafood is fine if you can eat it. Vegtables are ok as long as they are cooked enough that they are soft enough to be easily digestible. Limit yourself on the amount of bread that you eat. Eat all kinds of breads if you wish, but stick most like to white breads they slowly move on to the harsher stuff. Sweets are fine though.

In general, all alcohol is not good. I have been told by my doctors to stay off wine, beer, and all hard liquors.

well, benign means it is not moving or spreanding at all, it is at a stand still and practically dormant. hoowever the malignant, derived from the root malo which means bad, is the more harmfull one that can spread to other areas.

I know chamomile is used to soothe the stomache and heal ulcers.Also peppermint. Theres some good herbal teas that have chamomlie and peppermint in them. Also, when I get a bit of heartburn I drink some plain warm milk and that usually makes it go right away(unless youre lactose intolerent).Also theres a tea brand called yogi tea and you can get it at most health food stores, and theres one that ive used called tummy soother(or something to that effect) and it helps with heart burn and bloating. So try some of those. Good luck.

Superficial (in the most simplest of terms) means on top of the skin and/or outer most layer. For example, a raised mole would be considered a superficial imperfection of the skin. A deep layer ulcer would mean that the ailment has become so bad that it has penetrated the deepest layers of the stomach/intestine (even esophagus) and caused internal bleeding.

Could be a staph infection. If it is bad enough it may be MRSA in that case it is harder to treat, and spreads easy. Go to the doctor.
