Before becoming president, Ulysses S. Grant led the Union army to victory during the Civil War. As president, he worked to implement many of the policies that Lincoln had advocated to bring the former Confederate states back into the Union, and protect the rights of newly-free African Americans.

Despite his many achievements, Grant had a number of personal failings such as a high tolerance for both political corruption and the consumption of alcohol that tainted his legacy as president. Nonetheless, his military leadership gained him a place on American currency that's been held for over a century.

Also, as you have seen in many other postings on this site, a bill's serial number has little or nothing to do with its value. The date, series letter, and condition are what matter in most cases.

Not at all. Among currently-printed bills, the $10 note has a picture of Alexander Hamilton who was the first Secretary of the Treasury while the $100 note has a picture of Founding Father Ben Franklin.

In the past many other people who were not president have been depicted: Samuel Morse, Martha Washington, Lewis and Clark, Pocahontas, various cabinet officials, military leaders, etc.

Despite popular belief, there's no law stating only presidents can appear on US currency. The only requirement is that the person or persons shown can no longer be living. Other than that, the choice is at the discretion of the Secretary of the Treasury. The predominant use of presidential images has simply been a matter of custom since the early 20th century.

If you look right next to the signature you'll find the words "Secretary of the Treasury", as appearing on ALL current U.S. currency.

Wilson is not on any current US bank note. There once was a $100,000 gold certificate with his picture on it but those bills weren't put into circulation. They were only used for transferring funds within the Federal Reserve System.

The U.S. has never withdrawn any currency, so technically any bill is still legal tender, even one from the 1800s. However there are a few things to think about.

First, if the bill is in nearly new condition it may be worth more than $100! If it's in very good shape you should ask a coin and currency dealer if they're interested in buying it. Even if all you get is $105 you're still ahead.

Second, older bills lack many anti-counterfeiting features so it may be rejected by some stores because they don't want to take the risk that it's fake. Counterfeiters often copy older bills because they know they're easier to make. If you find out that the bill isn't worth any more than face value, you may have to take it to a bank to trade for newer currency.

Probably nothing. The Confederate States stopped issuing money in April, 1865. The date in the question is 102 years after that date. In the 1950s and 1960s it was not unusual to find ads for wild amounts ($1000, $10,000, etc.) of 'real' Confederate money for one dollar, with the ads placed in comic books.

"H" is the code letter for St. Louis rather than the bill's series. The series letter on a bill (if it has one) is a small letter located next to or under the date. The first bill in any series does not have a letter; the second one is A, etc. so it can be a bit strange.

In any case your bill, regardless of series letter, is worth somewhere in the $22 to $28 range.

More information is needed. If it doesn't have a green seal, what color is printed on it? What date and series letter? What condition is it in? See the link below for more.

It's a novelty item. If it's a real $2 bill with a picture pasted over Tom's, you might be able to redeem it at a bank for an undamaged bill. Otherwise it's a copy worth about as much as the paper it's printed on.

I do not know who answered this but they are wrong. Several years ago the US mint authorised the special printing of legal money with special pictures like the cottontail rabbit used by the Children's Miracle Network to make a $2.00 dollar bill that is legal tender per the United States Department of the Treasury Statute 333 USCA. These bills were given out through Walmart and Sam's Clubs with all proceeds going to The children's network. I know they were valued a little over $3 at issue. Value know is something even I would like to know? These were given out at Easter time and had a card of authenticity with them.

These were the old Japanese Invasion notes from WWII, issued and circulated in countries they invaded and occupied during the war. The "banana note" was the ten dollar note issued for circulation in Malaysia; so-called because it featured a banana tree on the front.

Face value only. Also, as you've seen from other postings, a bill's serial number is almost never a factor in its value. Date, series letter, seal color, and condition are what matter in most cases.
