Can you join the National Guard if you have you violent felony?

In previous years, yes. It may also depend on the felony. Any type of assault or violent crime will prohibit your entry into any service. Now, the last year or so the requirements to join are becoming more and more strict. This is due to the high enlistment rate because of the high unemployment rate.

So if you are eligible, you will require a waiver and that can take time.

What is the difference between National guard and the coast guard?

The Coast Guard is a fully federal force, assigned with the enforcement of maritime law and security.

The National Guard is a partially state organized force (although ultimate authority rests with the federal government), and is a reserve component of both the Army (Army National Guard) and Air Force (Air National Guard). When called to active duty by the state, they are considered an "organised militia", and can be used to perform law enforcement duties. However, when activated by the federal government, they are considered federal soldiers, and cannot be used in such a role.

For the east and west opposite coasts (Atlantic vs. Pacific), you can choose one from each list:

Atlantic Coast : Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida.

Pacific Coast : Washington, Oregon, California, and Alaska.

*Hawaii may also be considered a Pacific state although it is not part of the continental coast.

What is America's oldest branch of military?

None. The expected answer to this question is the US Marine Corps, established in 1775, a year before the US was established in 1776. The Continental Marines were formed in 1775 and disbanded after the war. Under the Articles of Confederation there were no Marines, and no US. The US was not established as a country until the signing of the Constitution in 1787, and the Navy Act of 1794 established the US Marines. Yet, the USMC prefers to predate its birth nineteen years earlier to 1775, just as the US celebrates its birthday eleven years earlier with the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Looking at it this way, the Marines are older than the US, but it is not technically accurate.

What does the Coast Guard do for your country?

Answer

The Coast Guard patrols the waters around states that have water-ways being there to help people in peril. I say in peril, their boat could be sinking or have motor problems. There could be someone sick or injured and the Coast Guard helps out when it can. They also patrol the sea's for drug smugglers.

Not only does the U.S. Coast Guard keep watch of the U.S. coastal regions and

water-ways they have been involved in every major conflict the U.S. has endured.

The USCG has many other missions. They include:

Aids to Navigation

Military Readiness

Drug Interdiction

Illegal Migrant Interdiction

Port Security

Search and Rescue

Boating Safety Education

Maritime Law Enforcement

Fisheries Enforcement

The U.S.Coast Guard currently operates within the Department of Homeland Security. Before that, it has been within the Treasury Dept., and the Transportation Dept. In time of war or national emergency, the Coast Guard can operate under the operational control of the Navy Dept. The last time this happened was in WWII, although the CG has been fractionally involved in every major conflict since then, including Vietnam, and both Gulf wars. The CG is often involved in training of foreign governments concerning matters where the CG is regarded as the world expert.

That's enough for a short answer. You can find more detailed explanations on the USCG web site, and in books on the subject.

How do you address an envelop to a retired United State Coast Guard admiral and his wife?

According to the Protocol School of Washington, you should address your letter to him on the envelope (let's call him Smith for a moment) "Rear Admiral and Mrs. Peter J. Smith". In the letter itself, you drop the 'rear' and address him only as 'Admiral'. You don't add 'ret.' on the envelope - and certainly not in the letter

  • because indication of his 'retired' status is only used in official correspondence.
