What were the contributions of Saint Ignatius of Loyola to the Catholic religion?

Catholic AnswerSt. Ignatius of Loyola founded the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), which was approved by Pope Paul III in 1540. St. Ignatius founded it with a twofold aim:

1) to strengthen and where necessary to restore the Catholic faith in the wake of the protestant revolt.

2) to preach the Gospel in non-Christian lands.

The Jesuits grew to be the largest, most mobile, and most highly educated single religious order in the Catholic world. They founded colleges worldwide and established many missions.

Besides the three normal solemn vows of a religious (save monks) of poverty, chastity, and obedience; they take an additional four simple vows: special obedience to the Pope, not to mitigate the society's poverty, not to accept ecclesiastical dignitaries, actively seeking to avoid such preferments. All finally professed made a total renunciation of private ownership.

The first was Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio, in 1835. Although Oberlin was the first college to admit blacks in 1835, it was not the first institution of higher learning to admit blacks. That was Princeton Theological Seminary, ten years before, in 1825 when Theodore Wright was admitted. He was graduated three years later as a member of the class of 1828. When he was recommended for study at Princeton Seminary by the Presbytery of Albany (New York), the Seminary Board of Trustees declared "his color shall form no obstacle in the way of his reception." page 35, William K. What interior threats to freedom did St. Ignatius of Loyola have to hurdle?

Roman Catholic AnswerIgnatius led a rather wild life in his youth, as he was brought up at Court, although he had no official function there. After that he went into the army and was wounded severely and had to undergo several very painful operations to restore the use of his leg. During his convalescence he did a lot of reading, mostly of a religious nature as that is all that could be found and he found himself day dreaming of adventures and ladies. It was only when he was day dreaming about rivaling the saints in virtue that he was satisfied, all the other dreams left him dissatisfied. As he had been a very careful youth, and then young man in the world, I imagine that his settling on a religious vocation curtailed his freedom quite a lot.
