When a National Guard unit is mobilized, they for all intents and purposes become active duty and indistinguishable from the regular Army. That being said, every service member in the US Army is infantry. They may have an MOS, a specific job they perform such as food service, health care technician, supply, or any other support role such as a chaplain's assistant. However, in the thick of it, and at the whim of command and the US Army, that person can be deplyed into a combat situation. Also, at any time in transit that a service member take fire from an enemy combatant, that service member is infantry.

Not FOR joining the National Guard or Guard obligations, but that does not mean they can't fire you for other reasons.

There were two instances of this happening - the first was at the University of Mississippi in September of 1962, and a group of US Marshalls and 3000 federal troops were sent in.

The one you're probably thinking of - and the one which the troops actually came from the National Guard (who had been federalized) - was the University of Alabama, which George Wallace himself had barricaded in opposition to integration. That was in June of 1963.

Colorado National Guard Armory was created in 1913.

There is no such thing called National Guard insurance. If you are hurt while on duty with the National Guard, medical care can be provided at a dispensery, or at a local V.A. hospital. The National Guard does not provide medical insurance.

Depends. If they're losing a rank (which is typical for NCOs who are going from NG to RA), yes. For lower enlisted (Private through Specialist), there probably won't be any reduction and rank, and the DOR will remain unchanged.

Yes, but that's not been a problem up to now; the US hasn't been invaded by anybody since Mexican bandits attacked in the very early 1900s. The only time that the USA has been attacked has been Pearl Harbor, in which the Japanese bombed, but nobody invaded with ground troops.

There had apparently been tentative plans for Japan to invade Oregon, to distract the US Navy - but Yamamoto vetoed that, saying that if Japanese troops were to invade, "there would be a rifle behind every blade of grass". And the largest assembly of men at arms in the field IN THE WORLD is on the first day of hunting season.

Not much. You would have to have 50 pt.s a year to qualify for a "good" year in the guard. Anything lower is a bad yr. and will not count towards retirement.

The Third Infantry Regiment, also known as the Old Guard, is the unit which handles those matters. They'll do color guards, they provide the guards for the Tomb of the Unknowns, they provide the United States Army Drill Team, and other like functions.

They serve the same purpose as the Army Special Forces (including undergoing the same exact selection and training); the difference is that NG SF units deploy less frequently, and get more down time (time back home) than their active duty counterparts; there are pros and cons to this. The pro is that you will not be completely worn out by having back-to-back-to-back rotations that many of the SF soldiers are experiencing right now. No matter what you think you want to do, being mentally and physically exhausted for months on end is not on the list.

These guys work very hard all the time, and get very little rest in between rotations (a couple months). The NG SF units, however, get an extended rest period in between rotations (upwards of 18 months), but the flipside to that is that their rotation lasts longer (1 year, versus 4-6 months for active duty). This longer time off allows NG SF soldiers to attend the schools of their choice within the Army (sniper school, Ranger, HALO/HAHO, etc) and have time to complete them; in active duty, you may not have time to complete a course in between rotations, and thus may not be able to expand your soldiering resume, so to speak.

So basically, the training is the same, but the rotations and time in between differs from active duty to NG units. So, it is personal preference. If you would rather be humping out there most of the time, and in the "s***", then go active duty. If you have your heart set on SF AND a particular school, go NG for a few years, them step up to active duty when you're good to go; but remember, if you get tired of active duty, you cannot simply revert back to NG whenever you want... you owe the Army time on, and they will get it from you.
