Yes, you go to AIT ( advanced individual training) which you get paid monthly for just like in basic training. Then you go home to your unit and start your monthly drills, that you also receive payment for according to your rank and pay grade.

Can you join the national guard and be on medicine?

That depends on what you are the medicine for. If you are on it because of a serious health condition and that condition may make it difficult for you to do the job, then they are not going to be keen on hiring you. So it is more a case of why you are on the medicine, that the medicine itself. However, if the medicine itself may affect you, that too would be of concern. You would really have to contact the medical people responsible for seeing who is fit to be a member and explain your precise circumstances to them, and they can then tell you.

It depends how far off in paperwork was performed on you. If you are already in the guard, you will get either a med. discharge or a less than honorable for lying under your enlistment oath.

NYS does not recognize National Guard and Reserves as veterans even after completion of their military obligations. Most (if not all) State and City applications with veterans preferences do not recognize National Guard/Reserve service, regardless of how long or honorable it was.
