Can hospitals require flu shots for employees?

I would think they could. I know that certain jobs require certain health requirements. I am a teacher and I am required to have a TB test every 2 years to keep teaching. In some states teachers are also required to have hepatitis shots to teach. I did the shots, but wasn't required to. With the shadow of a flu epidemic I would think a hospital would require a flu shot to be sure that their employees didn't spread the flu or get it.

New York State has just recently (late September 2009) enacted a mandate that all health care workers must take flu shots. It was the first state to make them mandatory.

Other states may have other requirements, but the shots are not yet made mandatory other than in New York. For example, in Texas the law states that the facility/nursing home/ hospital, etc. must make the flu shots available to employees, but an employee may refuse to take it without penalty. However, hospitals may then require the employees who refuse to use other special protective gear to keep patients safe, such as wearing face masks at all times on the premises.

Check with the state Department of Labor to find out the laws in your state.

It is recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that you protect yourself with the vaccinations. The rate of adverse effects is very low for the seasonal flu shots as they have been used and studied now for decades. Obviously, if you have ever had a reaction to the shot or if you have an allergy to the ingredients, eggs, or latex you should not take them. Report to the health care professionals before taking flu shots if you have a history of Guillain-Barre Syndrome, especially if it has been within the last six months.

Can flu shots be given in the Gluteal area?

They can be, but usually aren't. This is mostly because many people get red and tender tissue at the site of the injection for a few days after the shot. It is much easier to deal with that soreness in a location like the arm that doesn't need to be sat upon.

Is it safe to get pneumonia vaccine if your age is over 70?

Yes, in fact, it is recommended for people age 65 and over by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The risk of serious illness or death from the pneumococcal bacteria that the vaccine helps to prevent in that age group is much higher than the risk of any problems with the vaccination (very low occurrence rates).

See the CDC link in the related links section below for more about the vaccine and administration guidelines from the CDC.

Who developed a vaccination for smallpox?

Louis Pasteur
Edward Jenner found that people who contracted the cowpox virus didn't contract smallpox so he tested it out on a farmer's son who had contracted smallpox that week and he applied the liquid inside a cowpox sore to a cut and then after he healed from cowpox, he injected the liquid from a smallpox sore and the boy didn't contract smallpox.Which is how he found the vaccine...

Note: Developed not invented

Why are serious side effects from vaccines very rare?

Mostly because they have been used and improved over many decades. The amounts of the actual pathogens contained in vaccines are very small and so the main issue is usually allergy to the other ingredients (such as traces left of egg protein from the growth medium in manufacture of flu vaccines).

How many measles mumps and rubella vaccinations do you need?

If a child is homeschooled are childhood vaccinations required?

The laws vary with your location.

Many universities require proof of childhood vaccinations.

Shots are not required even for a child entering public schools. The requirement is either for proof of vaccinations or for the parent to sign a release form stating they do not wish for their child to be vaccinated. This is occurring more frequently around the country.

How do you produce immunity after a vaccine?

a vaccine is dead or weakened form of the virus you want to get immunity for. After the white blood cells fight them off, they already have the necessary antibodies to fight off stronger ones to come.

How do you get your child into a school without vaccines?

Schools may make allowances for those who make a conscientious objection to vaccination. Check with them to see if that is acceptable and what documentation is needed. There may also be 'anti-vaccination' groups in your area that have information on the process.

Why is the influenza vaccine not free?

In the US the vaccine for the H1N1/09 pandemic swine flu was provided free from the US government. However, if you had a private provider (doctor, hospital, pharmacy, etc.) administer your vaccination instead of a public health professional from the local or state government, then you may have been charged for their administration of the vaccine. The seasonal flu vaccine is usually either paid by insurance with preventive and wellness coverage, or charged to the individual directly.

Can you get a flu shot while taking Lisinopril?

There are no known drug interactions between the flu vaccine and other medications according to the manufacturers package inserts. Anti-hypertensives in combination with the flu vaccine should not be a problem, however, if you are taking Lisinopril for treatment after a recent heart attack, check with your cardiologist first to be sure your body is ready for vaccines. Tell the clinician who is preparing the vaccination for you just to be double sure.

What vaccine caused more death and illness than the disease it was intended to prevent?

At least one vaccine that was used that caused these problems was the Swine Flu vaccine given in the US in 1976 for one of the earlier strains of "Swine Flu" in humans. Many people died or contracted Guillian-Barre syndrome from the vaccine, more than were impacted by the disease itself. The method of preparation of vaccines has been changed and improved greatly, so this type of response to the newer vaccines is no longer anticipated.

You should start packing for a cruise at least a week before you go so you will have time to think about what you want to bring and to make sure there aren't any drastic changes in the weather...... you don't want to be on a boat with a sweater and its hot or shorts on when its cold...... :)

What three ways are vaccines administered?

Injection, nasal spray, and liquid or pill ingestion are three ways to administer a vaccine.

Does the US government give free flu shots?

The A-H1N1/09 "Swine Flu" shots and nasal spray are being provided by the US government without charge. If the vaccination is being given by a private provider (your doctor, at a clinic, a pharmacy, etc.), they may charge a fee for administration of the vaccination, but they will not charge for the vaccine medication itself.

Seasonal flu vaccinations are not provided by the US government for free and the recipient, if not covered by insurance, would be responsible for the costs of the vaccine and any associated administration fees.

Who gives vaccinations?

Anyone can give their own injections if they know how. If not your vet will have to do it. With the exception of the rabies vaccine. In some states it is illegal for anyone but a vet to administer the rabies vaccine.

What is the difference between Fluzone and Fluvirin vaccines?

Fluzone is the brand of flu vaccine approved for use in the US made by Sanofi Pasteur. It is available in the traditional IM flu shot and also a new ID (intradermal) form of flu vaccine that is now available in the 2011-2012 flu season in the US. In addition they make Fluzone High-Dose for use in the elderly and other who need a stronger dose for appropriate immune response. The IM formula can be used for infants 6 months old through all ages of adults. The Fluzone intradermal vaccine is licensed for use in the US for those aged 18 - 64 and includes flu vaccine for both Type A and Type B influenza viruses (including H1N1/09 in the 2011-2012 flu season). Fluzone uses formaldehyde during manufacturing.

Intradermal means "within the skin". It is administered with an ultra thin and short needle (90% smaller than IM needles) between the layers of the skin using what is called a microinjection system.

Ingredients:

Fluzone, Fluzone High-Dose, and Fluzone Intradermal from Sanofi Pateur, Inc.:

Egg Protein, Formaldehyde or Formalin, Gelatin, Octoxinol-9 (Triton X-100), Thimerosal (only in multidose containers).

Sanofi Pasteur is making the ID vaccine also under the name Intanza or ID flu for the Northern Hemisphere outside the US. It is available in 40 countries during the 2011-2012 flu season, including Australia, Canada and some European Countries. In the Southern Hemisphere it is marketed under the name Instivac.

FluvirinFluvirin is an intramuscular (IM) form of flu vaccine made by Novartis and approved for use for those aged 4 and over. It is also trivalent and includes vaccine for the same three types of influenza for the 2011-2012 flu season. Fluvirin uses Neomycin and Polymyxin B during manufacturing instead of formaldehyde.

Ingredients:

Fluvirin from Novartis:

Beta-Propiolactone , Egg Protein, Neomycin, Polymyxin B, Polyoxyethylene 9-10 Nonyl Phenol (Triton N-101, Octoxynol 9), Thimerosal (in the multidose containers), Thimerosal* (much smaller amounts in the single-dose syringes)

Both_Fluvirin_and_Fluzone:">Both Fluvirin and Fluzone:
  • Are trivalent vaccines (contain vaccine for 3 types of flu),
  • Contain no preservatives in single dose vials,
  • Are propagated in eggs, contain egg protein trace amounts (see more below in related links about egg content and egg allergies),
  • Both have only traces of thimerosal and less mercury than a meal of fish.

Fluzone uses formaldehyde instead during manufacturing.
