How do you treat a heat rash on a dog?

Hi. The best solution for this would be to take the dog to a veterinary centre, here they can thoroughly examine the dogs rash and decide on what cream/antibiotics could be taken. IF it is not too serious or is not obviously causing irritation for your dog I couldn't really say as I'm no expert myself really. I just happen to be very interested in veterinary medicine and I have lived with dogs all my life. Hope I helped :)

What do dog mites look like?

Mites are arachnids in the subfamily acarines. They have 8 legs and rounded bodies and can be burrowing (where they burrow under the skin to live/ lay eggs) or non-burrowing (where they feed on dead skin, body secretions etc)

Many species of mite infect dogs:

Sarcoptes scabiei (scabies) - this mite burrows under the skin and causes crusting, hair loss and itchy skin

Demodex canis - this mite lives within hair follicles and can lead to crusting, itching, redness and hair loss

Otodectes cyanotis - the ear mite, a non-burrowing mite found in the ears of cats and dogs, can lead to excess wax (usually brown, sticky and foul smelling)

Chyletiella species - found in dogs, cats and rabbits. Commonly called 'walking dandruff' due to it's white appearance on the animal.

Trombicula larvae (only larvae parasitic) - these crawl onto legs of dogs walking in fields and appear as orange patches when they feed in groups. (Not in UK).

What is a farm veterinarian?

A farm vet lives in a rural area and has more to do with treating livestock (cattle, sheep, goats, horses, pigs etc.) than dogs, cats and pets. Some of the animals, especially the horses, will be pets, but mostly farm vets look after commercial farming operations.

Your cat has a cut on it's mouth can an infection be passed to your dog?

The answer is, it depends upon what is causing the infection. An infected cut in the mouth is typically caused by secondary bacterial invasion of the cut, and some of these oral bacteria can jump from cats to dogs.

However, it would require enough bacteria be transferred to the dog to both colonize and overwhelm the dog's immune system, so the practical risk is very low.

What language should you take to become a veterinarian?

This will depend upon where you want to practice - if you are not already fluent in the major spoken language(s) of that area, I would suggest starting to learn the one or ones you don't already know. In the United States, the primary language of the veterinary schools is American English, but many veterinarians working on the West Coast and along the southern border find being bilingual in English and Spanish very helpful. In other areas, knowing French, American Sign Language, German, Mandarin Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai, or Japanese will be useful. The same will hold true regardless of the country - the best language to learn is one you don't already know but may have clients that speak that language.

If you are already fluent in all the major languages of where you anticipate practicing, learning Latin or Greek may be helpful - both languages have contributed many base words to the medical profession.

What can you use from over the counter to clean a miniature's horse eyes?

Use a damp cloth to clean the eyes. Do not use products if you don't know what you are doing. Get a vet's advice if you are unsure.

Is it bad when a kitten sneezes?

Not much - mucus may be expelled and the kitten should go on and be fine. This is likely similar to when you sneeze while dusting the top shelf of a bookcase - your nose became irritated, you sneezed, life went on.

However, if your kitten is constantly sneezing, has watery eyes or otherwise appears sick, you may want to make an appointment with your veterinarian. Most feline upper respiratory tract infections are viral, so there is no treatment, but your veterinarian can check for other causes (maybe a small piece of something stuck in the nose, etc.) and explain what the likely outcome of this will be.

Most kittens get over URTI on their own with no medication, but some will become "chronic snufflers" due to a change in the shape of their nasal passages. If this happens, you may have a sneezing cat, but otherwise it should be relatively normal.

What does it mean when your dog is often tired sleepy eye watery eye bugery and often sneezes?

It depends on how old the dog is ......

If it is young it is probly just a little bug

if it is a bit older definitely take it to the vets ....

Can a Felon work as a veterinarian assistant?

This will depend upon what the felony conviction was for. Regardless of the criminal history, a person can become a veterinarian by completing the curriculum at an accredited college of veterinary medicine. However, depending upon the conviction, the person may not be eligible for a state license to practice or to handle controlled substances like anesthetic agents. A felony conviction would make it more challenging for a person to work as a private practice veterinarian, but they could work as a public health veterinarian or for the federal government (again, depending upon the exact felony conviction).

What is the typical cost to spay or neuter a dog?

I live in Central NJ and took my 9 month old Golden to our regular vet, not a clinic. The presurgical bloodwork to make sure Barney was good and healthy for surgery was about $85 and was done a week before the surgery. Normal neutering at the vet is about $250, but unfortunately, Barney had a retained testicle and they had to go into his abdomen to find the missing one. This resulted in a long incision in his belly, about 5-6 inches. The neutering fee for this complicated situation was about $390. I love my vet and felt the higher fee was justified as opposed to going to a neuter/spay clinic that would have done the surgery for a fraction of that cost. My vet's office also bathed Barney, post-surgery, and gave him lots of love and attention. They didn't keep him overnight either so he was able to recuperate at home. They sent him home with pain meds for 1 week and antibiotics for 2 weeks and he'll have his stitches removed after 2 weeks. Hope this helps!

How much onion would it take to harm a dog?

Onion is toxic to dogs. The amount varies per dog. Each dogs body has a different tolerance to onion and when that tolerance is reached it can become very dangerous. This amount varies by individual dog, not breed, so there is really no way to know exactly how much would be harmful to a dog.

Is Tums safe to give to dogs?

Yes - dogs tend to not have the same indigestion problems that humans have, and many of the Tums product line has a great deal of both sodium and calcium in it. Taking too much of either element at one time can be fatal, although this is not guaranteed.

Are safety procedures important when working with animals?

Yes, safety is extremely important when working with animals, particularly in medical situations. Animals that are sick, in pain or otherwise not their normal selves can react unexpectedly and violently. This is why most veterinarians do not allow owners to hold their own animals while the veterinarian administers a shot or examines them - the owner may get hurt when the animal bites, scratches or tries to run away.

How do you treat a calf with broken jaw?

The short answer is, you don't; mature horses with broken weight-bearing leg bones do not heal well (or at all), are generally in excruciating amounts of pain and are often a danger to themselves or their handlers because they panic due to being restrained. However, a young foal (6 months old or younger) with a greenstick fracture or a fracture of a non-weight-bearing bone may be able to have the fracture reduced and tolerate corrective equipment (cast, splint, etc.) until the bone heals.

This is where the folk wisdom of shooting (ie, mercy killing) a horse with a broken leg comes from: there is little that can be done to keep the horse safe, comfortable and immobile for the months it would take for the bone to heal up enough to support the animal's weight.

I have seen this tried, on a six year old Arabian stallion with a compound open fracture of the proximal radius. He freaked out when put into a body sling to help support his weight and broke an equine vet resident's ribs. He had multiple surgeries to realign the bone fragments, put antibiotics into the break site to prevent bone infection, pull out dead bone fragments and put transverse supporting pins through the distal humerus. The owner spent over $10,000 on surgeries, X-rays, hospitalization and daily care, the break never healed and the stallion was eventually euthanized.
