Water-Cooled VW

Volkswagen Company has been producing water-cooled engines since 1972. Unlike its air-cooled predecessor, water-cooled engines minimize the risk of overheating the engine. Models include Scirocco, Rabbit, Passat, Beetle and Vanagon.

Does the VW beetle float in water?

The old beetle could float but the new ones will not.

Can a broken thermostat on an oil boiler cause hot water to flow out through the expansion pipe?

Yes, the water is getting too hot and is blowing out the pressure relief valve through the expansion tank. You should change this immediately.

I don't agree:
I am assuming that by expansion pipe, you are referring to the pipe connected to the pressure relief valve - A broken Thermostat won't cause the relief valve to activate. A broken thermostat will cause the boiler to either run or not run as desired. However, a broken (or incorrectly set) aquastat can cause the boiler to run too hot and cause the valve to activate, but if it is chronic, it could be a defective or dirty relief valve, defective expansion tank, a problem with the pressure reducing valve on the domestic feed or (as was my problem) an internal leak in my tankless coil.
What is your boiler's pressure gauge reading and what does the Temp Gauge read on a call for heat (High Limit on and off)? Also, put a bucket under the pipe and carefully burp the relief valve to clear out any debris that might be causing the leak.

How do you change the thermostat adjacent to the radiator on a 199o vw cabriolet?

There is a thermostat mounted to the radiator (left side); you merely unscrew it after disconnecting the electrical plug. Screw the new one in (along with a new washer) and reconnect the plug.

To replace the thermostat inside the water pump: Drain the coolant; remove the lower radiator hose flange from the water pump housing; pull the thermostat out; install new t-stat and seal; reinstall the flange; fill system with coolant/anti-freeze.

How do you replace the thermostat located on a 1997 Volkswagen?

I have recently replaced Thermostat on my 1999 New Jetta GLS. Here is what I did and the replacement was successfull.

First, the coolant has to be drained completely. Locate the drain at the bottom left side of radiator and drain the coolant from radiator. Then drain the coolant from the engine block. I did not do the second drain and got about 1 pint of coolant spilled during the thermostat replacement. Detach the hose from the thermostat housing cover at the front of engine block. Pull the metal hose clamp back over the hose. You will need wide angle pliers to loose the clamp. Reattachment during reinstallation will be more difficult. Remove the bolts/nuts and detach the cover. You will need 10mm size wrench (or Allen wrench) to do it. I got very anxious when I find out how inaccesible are the nuts. The Allen wrench would work better if I had one with the right size. Use screwdriver to gently remove the O-ring. It is recommended that you get a new O-ring. Remove the old thermostat, place the new one, then O-ring and the remaining steps are reverse of installation. Remember to close the coolant drains before refilling the cooling system - the old coolant can be reused. The coolant must be added gradually. The engine should be turned on for a while to allow the coolant to reenter all the space in the engine block and radiator.

How can you get the front hood to open on your 67 vw beetle?

The boot or the trunk is under the front hood of a 1967 VW Beetle. To open the hood, make sure the handle is unlocked, turn the handle to the right and lift.
