Water Pumps

Tripped across this today so I don't know how old the question is-The water pump is on the shifter side of the engine. First take off the clutch slave cylinder that sits in front of the pump. Put a pan under the bike as you will lose clutch fluid,coolant and engine oil while you do this. Once you have the slave cylinder off, tie the slave hose out of the way. Next you will see the pump in front of you and remove the mounting bolts to the engine as well as loosen the hose clamp holding the hose to the pump. Here comes the "fun" part-right next to the rubber hose there is a rigid return line to the pump, held on to the pump by a seemingly hard to get to bolt. This bolt drove me crazy trying to get it out. You will have to go at it from under the exhaust at an angle, utilizing a long extension with a swivel on the end and an 8mm socket-I suggest a quarter-inch drive because you will be trying to squeeze between two exhaust headers. Once you remove the bolt the pipe will back out enough for you to wiggle the main body of the pump out. Do not move the engine once you have the pump out. Reverse the whole thing to install. You will have to remove your timing belt cover as well as you're harmonic ballancer. I would recommend changing the timing belt while your at it. It would be a good idea to pick up a repair book when you get you're parts.

A water pump should have nothing to do with the bearing in your engine. If you are hearing a knocking from the engine then you are going to need to replace/rebuild. I have seen bad waterpumps make knocking nosies but you said it was new. Id check your work!

If you have timing chain it means that your water pump is connected to one of the belts. So the answer is no. But make sure that you have timing chain. Because if you have timing belt then the water pump is connected to the timing belt. And the latter one has to removed if you want to change the pump.

I plugged a water pump on a 89 mustang 5.0 with jb weld steel stick, if done properly it will stop your leak. however if a lot ccolant is comming from the weep hole then you need to replace the water pump.

You should see the coolant circulating in the radiator when the car is running

It will leak from behind the pulley that runs the water pump. There is also a small hole in the bottom of the the pump case for that very reason. If the shaft seal goes antifreeze will weep from the hole.

Yes , overheating can warp/distort the gaskets or internal seals but either way you'll need to replace the water pump or purchase a repair kit for the pump which will contain the seal and mounting gasket .

The thermostat determines when the engine is hot and switches the fans on and off. You know it is working because the fans run.

You need to get the water pump replaced, because the coolant is not circulating (that is why the radiator stays cold even though the engine is overheating). Because this requires the cambelt ("timing belt") to be removed and then put back in the correct position afterwards, this is not a simple job and is likely to cost you a couple hundred quid.

Take the opportunity to check your service history for if the cambelt is due to be changed in the next 10,000 miles - if it is, you can save money in the next couple of years by getting it changed at the same time.
