How do you reformat a laptop from Windows 2000 with no A: drive only a D drive and put Windows XP back onto the laptop?

Assuming your "d drive" is a CD-ROM drive, you can boot from the Windows XP install disk. This disk contains utilities that are very easy to use that will format and prepare the drives for installation of Windows XP. If your computer doesn't boot from the CD, you'll need to go into "setup" (usually by pressing a button when the computer first starts ie "Press DEL to enter Setup"), and find an option that says "Boot Order" or "boot devices". Make sure your CD-Rom is in the list ahead of the hard drive (sometimes listed as HDD or one of the IDE).

It is primarily used for to remotely administer network servers." C$ is the admin share for your local C: drive. What is the speed of a PC?

The speed of a PC generally refers to the system clock rate, measured in gigahertz and sometimes megahertz. A megahertz is one million cycles per second, while a gigahertz is a billion cycles per second.

However, that is not the only measure of throughput, and the clock rate can be misleading. So clock rate is not the same thing as performance. Sometimes a machine with a slower clock rate actually runs applications faster than one with a faster clock rate. That was how it was between Intel and AMD for years. The AMD processors could work faster than ones from Intel with a higher clock rate. The difference here has to do with instruction speed. If a machine is of a lower clock rate than another, but its instructions are more efficient and take less clock cycles to complete, then it will likely perform better.

Instruction speed is based on whether the instructions have their own dedicated processing hardware, or if there is microcode to derive them from other instructions. For instance, NEC V20 processor, a replacement for the Intel 8088, performed faster than an 8088 at the same clock rate. The main difference was that it actually had a hard-coded multiplier. The 8088 didn't, but relied on the adder and microcode to loop it to emulate multiplication. The reason the V20 could add circuitry to do multiplication was because they used a newer technology that allowed them to cram more stuff into an IC. So their multiplication instruction was much more efficient since they had the room to add dedicated circuits.

Is it better to shut down computer or leave it on?

With the newer computers the "Sleep" (stand by) mode works fine. If it's "days" before you use it again then i usually just turn it off. The computer runs a "Maintenance" program around 2:00 ish in the morning so it doesn't hurt to leave it on overnight once in awhile if you don't use it very often. It won't do the maintenance if the computer is asleep tho. So disable the "Automatically Sleep" option for those days. You can still use the "Display Sleep" no problem. I believe it will still do the maintenance if you turn the "Put hard disk to sleep when possible" mode in the Preferences/Energy Saver. It just pauses the hard drive so it's not spinning until you need it.

If you bought it from an independent O/O or small fleet owner, you'll have to contact them to get the password. If you bought it from a dealership, try "0000". If you can't figure it out, then a dealership can reflash the ECM completely and restore the default settings.

Which phase in the Windows Vista boot sequence replaced the boot loader phase of Windows XP?

Nothing was techinically "replaced", but they booted in phases rather than specific files. This lead to adding bootmgr(Windows Boot Manager) which reads a registry type file that was not used in Windows XP.
