yes I think above incorrect answer. My understanding is that if phone is switched off, then phone cannot register missed call so user cannot see. Hence why user should have voicemail activated & set-up to kick in if phone is off or out of reception so user knows someone tried to call as they will hopefully leave voicemail. This is what happens on my mobile phone.

SIM (Subscriber Idendity Module) is the only idendity of Service Provder on your mobile handset. It means all the credentials and secrect Keys related to network Authrization are stored in SIM card. When mobile is booted up first thing it will do is to search the Network, The network name is stored in the SIM. When it finds the network then mobile will attempt to authorize on this network using Secret keys stored in the SIM. Without SIM mobile phone doesnt know anything about Secret keys so it cannot camp on to the network without SIM.
