The Representation of the People Act was passed on 6 February1918 giving women the vote provided they were aged over 30 and either they, or their husband, meet a property qualification. In 1928 The Equal Franchise Act was passed giving women equal voting rights with men.

There was a debate on women's fashion in the Gilded Age because not everyone agreed on the change. Women wanted a change in the way they dressed because it was uncomfortable, hard to manage, and also had some serious health effects. Men did not like the change and didn't want women speaking out against them. Women began wearing a dress called the bloomer dress and were ridiculed by men for the foolish costume showing they're undergarments (a pair of Turkish trousers). In the end women won the rights to dress differently and many more movements began soon after.

When the United States became an independent nation, white men (many of whom were property owners) were the first to be allowed to vote. Women and ethnic minorities (such as black people) were not allowed to vote in those early decades of US history. Black men got the right to vote after the civil war, and women (both black and white women) got the right to vote in 1920. Citizens between the ages of 18 and 21 got the right to vote in 1971.
