What language has the word zoo come from?
The word zoo is an abbreviation of the terms "zoological garden", which refers to "zoology", the study of animals. This word comes from two Greek words, ("zwo" meaning "animal" and "logos" meaning "study") zoology. It was first changed into the abbreviated form, "Zoo" when referring to the "Gardens and Menagerie of the Zoological Society of London, they often shortened the name to "London Zoological Gardens", or the "London Zoo" which was first opened to the public in 1847, and the abbreviation "zoo" was printed about the same time. But it took a song to make the term really popular, "Walking in the Zoo on Sunday". For more details, please see the site listed below.

Why do zoos do more harm than good?
Zoos are considered to "do more harm than good" simply from an extremist abolitionist animal rights' stand point. To see such points expressed in a sensational manner, please see the related link below to read PETA's (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) views and facts on animals' lives at the zoo.
It should not go without being said, however, that zoos are there to educate people about the animals raised there and natural conservation practices that go into the maintaining of wild populations of certain wildlife. Many people cannot nor do not have enough money to go on a round-the-world trip to see all the animals they can simply got to a zoo to see, and nor would they invest or donate the money to save certain animals in other countries. They would, however, pay to see such animals to give their children the kind of experience they would never get if no such animal sanctuaries existed, as well as learn things about the animals that will never be found close to their own home.
Zoos are also there to help breed and increase population of species that are considered endangered, critical or near extinction, or to establish a population of animals that are needed because animals in the wild are facing serious crisis (such as a rare cancerous disease in Tasmanian Devils) that could lead to their extinction. Animals at many zoos are treated humanely and always with their welfare in mind; many animals (which constitute most, if not all) born and raised in zoos are not able to survive out in the wild should they be released. This is because they have recieved too much human exposure and training to be deemed able to survive on their own looking for food and escaping dangers such as predators and more aggressive animals of their species. Exceptions are animals raised in conditions where they do not receive adequate human exposure to render them tame because of the plan to release them into the wild. An example of this is the raising of Black-footed Ferrets to be released back into their natural grassland habitat in southern Saskatchewan.
Taronga Zoo, Sydney. ---- Most zoos around the world would have kangaroos. Kangaroos are plentiful in Australia and they can live in a variety of climates. They can survive on grass, which is also plentiful. Chances are your local zoo has kangaroos.
What are some reasons against keeping animals in zoos?
Animals should not be kept in zoos because most people go to the zoo purely for their entertainment and truly I think that animals were not created for our entertainment. We shouldn't put animals lower than us. Which means that in my point of view animals should be allowed to enjoy their habitat, live with there family freely, instead of living in a zoo trapped behind bars, living with whatever other animals the keepers want in the same enclosure. Without a pack or pride, and not allowed to breed, sounds like a nightmare to me. Imagine yourself trapped behind bars and people come to see you for their own amusement, and entertainment. You are not in your original habitat, and you lack the support of your family and friends, also the food you eat is a type of food you don't normally eat. If you don't like it well too bad, you have to eat it or you will die of hunger. So, this might be how animals feel living in zoos and we need to be understanding, and considerate of their circumstances.
Animals are born wild, they should live and die wild . It is also wrong because the animals don't get to behave naturally, like hunting their prey, breeding, and social activities such as packs and prides. All of these things would help them adjust to the captivity in a more healthy manner.
To figure the amounts of medications, vits, and food for the animals math is needed. You would need to know how many of each animal, and then use that to figure how much food to prepare for each animal. You'd need to count all the animals, to make sure all were accounted for and none were missing. Also, you'd need to use math for deciding when to set-up schedules for breeding the animals. Math is used in all everyday life, not just in zoos, but they are a good example.

zoo's are a good thing.
I think they are good. A way for us to marvel at the beauty of the animals, and while some may say they should be in the wild and it's cruel to keep them, it means they are guaranteed food, shelter and safety.
Is it cruel to keep animals in zoos?
In a way they are keeping them from the wild and making them be a show. But on the other hand these animals are endangered and breeding them helps keep the number of them up. And if they lived in a rainforest they could have been killed so they have saved there lives so there not cruel

Zoos ruin animal life. Animals should be free. Now, domestic animals wouldn't survive out in the wild.
What are animals do in the zoo?
Zoo animals paly with their caretakers. They also have fun sometimes by mating that is by having sex with their parteners.Zoo animals though cannot move freely.Sometimes they enjoy that is with their cartakers or have sex.
Yes, zoos do protect animals. If they were out in the wild many wouldn't have any chance of surviving. But in zoos their food, water, any supplements, or shots they need are brought to them. Any medical attention they need is available for them. They are usually cared for and have enough room to move, play, and many times they are given "enrichment toys and food". Plus they are protected from their predators, and babies abandoned are hand reared. Almost all zoos protect the animals from the visitors too, not allowing the guests to harass them, throw things at them, or be too loud, or taunt the animals. It's not always perfect or ideal, but as a general rule, most zoos that are accredited, or certified do try to protect and care for their animals.
The word zoo is defined as a park or an institution where animals are kept, studied, bred and exhibited for public viewing. You can have as many kinds of zoos as animals. Zoo's can contain just mammals, fish, reptiles, domestic, wild, and the list goes on.
Are endangered species of animals safer in a zoo?
yes....although not natural humans can look after them....this includes suitable diet, eliminating competition and predators and often encouraging reproduction.
A zoo is an artificial habitat. Zoos seek to recreate a natural habitat for the safety and survival of their inhabitants.
One would not say that an elephant's natural habitat is a ZOO, for example. Ask yourself, are there animals that are only ever found living in a zoo? If not, then it is not a habitat in the strictest sense. The same logic goes for farms and aquariums.
How many people visit San Diego Zoo each day?

Is there handicap parking at Bronx zoo?
There really isn't any parking at all at the Central Park Conservatory. The Central Park Conservatory is a part of Central Park, and Central Park is surrounded by city streets. It doesn't have a parking lot or anything like that. If you can find a parking space, then you can park on the street outside the entrance to the Conservatory (which would be 5th Avenue at 105th Street), but there is no reserved parking for people going to the Conservatory.
I was able to find a list of parking garages around Central Park, but most of them are relatively far away. The closest one I could find was on 94th Street between 3rd and 2nd Avenues. That is about a mile away from the entrance to the Conservatory.
See the Related Links below for more information. The first link shows you a picture of Vanderbilt Gate, which is the only street entrance to the Central Park Conservatory. As you can see, you enter directly off the street.
The second link is from the Central Park website. It describes the Conservatory Garden, and if you click the little button on top that says "Map It," it will show you where the Conservatory is in the park.
The third link is to the list of parking garages, just in case you want to use one of them.
