They are pretty much the same in the fact that they can both read different types of file extensions. They differ in some things, though. I personally prefer Real Player, because it can download videos from the internet, record series, rent movies, etc., almost like a mix between Media Player and VLC. Also, Real Player has it's own extension, RM or RA. Additionally, it has the RealPlayer Converter, which is very useful whenever you want to read files in AAC or WMV -- which, by the way, it is also compatible with.
But VLC has also its own good things. Like, for example, the fact that it is free. Real Player is free too, but it constantly reminds you about the Real Player Plus...or well, premium -- which is annoying.
Just go to VideoLan.org and download the windows version of the VLC Media Player. From there auto-install will guide you through it.
1. Install synaptic package manager, if you don't already have it.
2. Find the VLC Media Player and select install.
3. During the installation, there should be a checkbox that allows you to "Download Package Files" only.
4. You can run the package files later and install offline.
Yes! When you've started the video you wanna see, simply drag and drop the .srt file to VLC window. Or right click with your mouse in window and choose subtitles and open file (choose the .srt file)

Make a back up copy of the video file before experimenting though,
and expect frustration!
