How is overfishing being maneged to fix it?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

i have a couple simple ways.... mabye the govement should try to help prevent this. close open waters, or get someone to govern them. the government or president should be aware of what is happening. alot of men are going to lose jobs but if they don't let it set for a bit, this can be an even bigger issue. Another way is to take very little fish or underwater creatures. its about time the government does something.

What are examples of overfishing?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The Gulf of Cortez, the inside of the Baja peninsula has been over fished by illegal shark fishing. The top predator has been nearly wiped out. Now large schools of Humbolt Squid are attacking anything that is swimming in the water, including people.

In the Mediterranean, generational fishermen are starting to go away because of overfishing of Tuna. It's the only thing they know how to do but their ancestors didn't have the high tech equipment we have today, so they have caught too many and now this generation of fishermen are under strict quotas, which mean less money.

Cod used to be so abundant in the waters off of New England, it was THE fish. Now Cod is a regulated fishery.

In Florida, the tourist fishing industry is so important that they regulate a lot of species of fish. Some I bet you've never even heard of. Look up Florida's fishing regulations. This is all due to overfishing.

How does a bath use more water then a 5 minute shower?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

No and yes it matters how long your in but for me i am in the shower for 5-10 minuets and it uses more then a bath. The reason is that when your in a bath the same water is being used through your cleaning but with a shower it is being filtered the whole time. For me I would recommend using the shower because it is a cleaner way to clean yourself.

What percentage of waste in landfills is construction debris?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

65% of the world is landfill.

Pretty sure that is incorrect. I'd really like to know where the previous answerer pulled that figure from.

This is the best estimation I can find, from Yahoo Answers:

"The average person generates about a ton of trash every year. That translates to about 100 cubic feet a year in landfill (including dirt). We've had an average of 5 billion people in the world for the past 50 years since post WW2. That comes to 25 trillion cubic feet of landfill. Average depth of a landfill is 100 feet, so there are probably around 250 billion square feet of landfill. A square mile is 25 million square feet. So, that means about 10,000 square miles is landfill. Now, the Earth has 200 million square miles of surface, of which 50 million is dry land. Thus, 1/5000 of dry land area is taken up by landfills, or 0.02% It's actually quite tiny, as compared to land used for grazing or agricutlure, which is close to 10% to 20%."

Is trash cleaned before it gets put in a landfill?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Over time, trash in landfills decomposes. The rate of decomposition varies based on the material, moisture and amount of oxygen. Landfill operators try to maximize the compaction of the material in a landfill threfore reducing the available oxygen available for the decomposition process. When the trash decomposes, methane gas is released. The amount of gas has to be controlled by venting or capturing it to avoid underground fires.

What will happen if water isn't conserved?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Think about it: 75% of the earth is covered in water. This seems like a lot, but only 3% of that is freshwater, and only 1% of freshwater is accessible because the rest is frozen in glaciers. Along with this, we are also polluting our water. If we don't start conserving, we may run out of drinkable water completely and have to rely on the rain.

How many trees does one ton of recycled paper saved?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Average 1 ton of waste paper could saved 17 mature trees.

Recycling one ton of paper saves 17 trees

First, we have to define what a "tree" is. Let's say an average pine tree weighs a ton (2000 pounds). About half the tree ends up being usable, so that's 1000 pounds. Well a 500 page package of paper is about 5 pounds. So 1000 pounds (tree) divided by 5 pounds (ream of paper) is 200 reams of paper from 1 tree. The average business uses about 1 pound of paper per day per employee. That's a lot of trees.

How do you uninstall a garbage disposal?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Turn on a strong flow of COLD water

Slowly add the materials to be disposed of

Metal, large bones and fibrous materials should be disposed of in the trash

After disposing of the materials, leave the disposer on for one full minute with a strong flow of COLD water,

About once a week dump a tray of Ice cubes down the disposer while running, use care to prevent ice from popping back up into your face, use a small stream of water with this

Add any citrus peel to deodorize the disposer with the ice cubes

The ice cubes scour the inside of the disposer and remove the build up of waste food.

No grease, oil, fats or silverware!

Do you waste more water in a bath or a shower?

Shower,

Shower heads can usually allow anywhere between 2.5 and 5 gallons of water a minute. Toilets can use this volume in a single flush. As most showers last longer than one minute the shower volume is considerably higher.
