The Nineteenth Amendment (Amendment XIX) to the United States Constitution prohibits each of the states and the federal government from denying any citizen the right to vote because of that citizen's sex. This implicitly gave "adult" women the right to vote. (all above the age of 18 were affected by the 26th amendment in 1971)

It was passed by the House on May 21, 1919, and by the Senate on June 4, 1919. It was ratified on August 18, 1920.
