A good with highly elastic demand will have higher changes to quantities demanded for relatively small changes in price. Whereas something with a lower elastic demand, will not have major changes in demand for a small change in price. So for example, the price of a diamond is highly elastic, a small change in say a fall of diamond prices will have a huge impact, whereas something like salt, an increase or decrease in price will not affect the amount demanded. This recession was first caused by banks lending money to people that weren't very likely to re-pay the money. This caused the trust in banks (by people, governemtns and other banks) to fall and now they won't lend money to each other. In a little more depth, the sub-prime mortgage market, a lack of risk-aversion and a lack of regulation caused bank's equity values to fall very rapidly and as a result the bank's are very wary about who they lend to in case they lose a lot of money and become insolvent. This causes a contraction in the money supply and this is prolonging the recession.

The long answer is because our currency is fiat money. We do not base the value of the dollar on any commodity (such as gold), and thus have no real use for it. If we were on say the gold standard, then the gold in Fort Knox would play a much different part in our economy.
